How Stuff Works - Maglev/ Electro Magnetic Propulsion

...quick primer for those who are wondering what a MagLev is. I love that site.
What are your theories/questions?

basic premise is to levitate a vehicle and give it full free 2D movement. I realize control would be difficult, but I consider that a secondary issue to the actual levitation and eventual propulsion.

honestly my main question is really not a question at all, I'd like to brainstorm with a few people on how to generate a field that would allow an item to levitate. I'm really not impressed with the Moller air cars n' stuff like that... I think they're hugely inefficient... I know with Diamagnetic Levitation you can levitate items that are typically conisdered "non" magnets... and I think there has to be a means to expand these principals towards more of a commerical type application.

diamagnetic levitation is cool -> http://www.hfml.kun.nl/pics/Movies/frog.mpg

Unfortunatly its not very likely to happen. The problem is its difficult, if not impossible to construct such a uniform field, over a large area, to be useable for free 2d movement.

The trains work because they create a series of alternating fields along a path, this is ok because there poles that generate the field are contiguous along the trains path. Over a wide 2d area, one would have to make either a single huge field, with would create a dome shaped area of movement.

A more feasible idea would be to create many small fields apart from each other and utilize many magnets to create a 'tripod' to hold a vehicle aloft. imagine a matrix of fields and a wide vehicle with magnetic pods spread about to utilize many of them at once (kinda like the ships in the Matrix, in a way)

I don't know how you could use the alternating field polarities to create movement, but external propulsion is a possibility.

In any event i am thinking it would be a bumpy ride.

now this guy accomplished some sort of mag lev using rows of electromagnets with hall effect sensors wired up to the peaks, and aimed them each at a 45 degree angle inwards to levitate a magnet... I was wondering maybe you could reverse this... on a magnetic track, mount the electromagnet rows at a 45 degree angle outwards and that would support whatever is built around the rows...

yeah I was thinking about the vehicles in the matrix... circular wound electromagnets arranged in such a manner to stabilize the vehicle over a "track"

Sherif, hit me up sometime at a meet... I'm not a guru, but I know a fair amount (physics, electronics, etc.).

The Council Of Off-Topic may help you in your quest for knowledge.....

Seriously.. I think the OT crew may help expand this subject to something more rewarding.
