Bill, this is an email I got back from Majestic Turbo in Texas. They rebuilt Skidazzle's turbo with a larger compressor from an 80's Thunderbird turbo coupe:

Dear Tim,
We can do. I suggest a T3/T4 hybrid. Please
call so we can discuss options, so we can
give you an accurate cost estimate. Our
1-800-231-5566# runs 8-5, M-F, CST. Please
ask for Robert, Anita, or Kevin.

We offer one day service, no charge diagnosis,
pay gorund freight one way (in US), and accept
major credit cards. Hope to hear from you soon!

Subject: turbo upgrade for IHI-RHB52

Hi,

I'm using an IHI-RHB52 turbo that originally came as an OEM part on a 1994
Subaru Legacy turbo (5spd, 4wd). I'm using this turbo on a 1999 Subaru
Impreza 2.5 RS. My engine is 2.5L and the Legacy I got it from was a head
restricted 2.2L.

My main concerns with this turbo are:

Excessive back pressure
Inability to build more than 6-7 psi at high rpms (from 5000 to 6250
redline)

What can you do for my turbo?
Could you please estimate prices for various performance upgrade packages?
What kind of turnaround time is expected with an upgrade?

Thank you,

I never called them because I'm too impulsive, and I'm trying to curb some of my car related expenditures. I will be doing this sometime though, probably sometime after the holiday season.

You got the turbo on already? The JC sports kit, right?

Does that kit come with an intake or exhaust replacement? If not, I'd go this route first, you'll gain much more power by eliminating restrictions and increasing boost than by just increasing boost alone.

The turbo is good for somewhere around 230 horsepower. With the larger compressor that Skidazzle is using (and many Miata guys, there's a Miata kit that uses the IHI) it's good for around 260 hp. That's probably enough to keep most of us happy, and that upgrade doesn't cost much (think it's around $500). Hope that info helps.

Tim,

It's a turbo kit, not an exhaust kit. So we do our own exhaust, but it does include the intake.

The legacy turbo runs pretty cool with an intercooler vs the smaller IHI loyale turbo, and if you want the car to last forever, you'll wanna stay with the 230 hp 7 psi kit

However, I am told it can push 8-10 psi with an electronic boost controller. Hmmm....

Larry www.ImprezaRS.com

PS: We will be adding my intercooler sprayer on 10/28/00 when I upgrade my clutch. That should help lower the intake charge temps from the small turbo at higher psi's...

The only company I would deal with for turbochargers is Forced Performance in Texas. Rest assured when the Rex comes over, Robert will have something wild for it. http://www.forcedperformance.com
He can rework any turbo, into whatever you want, and also custom fab tons of parts.

Mr. dotCom,

Yes the IHI can push 8-10 psi, but that's misleading. I've run with the pressure line to the wastegate disconnected (I know, not a good idea), and have seen boost rise up slightly past 10 psi in the lower rpms (below 4000). However, even with the wastegate completely shut (as in this case) this turbo WILL NOT provide more than 7 psi at redline (and even that is only in 4th and 5th gears). An electronic boost controller will not allow you to bypass this problem.

Not being awkward here...but..

When you guys talk about boost and max psi .. at what rev/flow are you talking about..

Sure a turbo might make 12/14/40 psi.. but at what flow/rev range ?

You might find you have to back the boost off the higher up the rev range you go, otherwise u will be way off the comp map (efficiency) of the turbo... and will be killing the turbo and heating the intake too much.

When looking for a turbo... look at the comp maps, etc.... do some simple calcs... work out the flow rates at certain revs and boost.... and see where it puts you on the map.

Well,

I am told by an experienced Subaru mechanic that I should limit my MY00 to 7 psi anyways, or I will have problems with the drivetrain, expecially above 10 psi.

I am happy with an IHI that will only do 7 psi max, and want to focus on reliability. Going from 165 hp to 230 hp is fine with me

I think it would be nice to cnsider re-working the turbo someday. How do they do a T3/T4 hybrid with an IHI though, I don't understand?
