Post What mods would it take to beat an Eclipse GSX?

Arghh! I bit the dust to an Eclipse GSX, 1st generation, with a turbo boost control. I'm reading about Gary's (burnninrubber) car and I am quite impressed. All I have on my car is an Amsoil air filter. Can I take the Eclipse without going turbo?

You'll spend more by not going turbo, unless you slap a 75 shot of nitrous on the car. A turbo will be the best way to do it.

LOL! A turbo will be the only way to do it! You say it was a 1st generation GSX? well lets look at it here....

1st gen GSX costs about $6000 if it's in perfect condition. modifications for that car are so inexpensive and easy to come by that it's hard NOT to mod the car. heck, you can add 15hp for FREE on that car. If he's only got a boost controller, then he could possibly be sitting at 15-16lbs of boost which is around 230-240hp. Oh, and weighs almost the same WITH the turbo. I could take a 1st gen GSX, run it on pump gas and still pull 300+ hp for under 10k. More then half of what you paid for your RS.

Good luck. You're gunna need it.

STI running gera (preferably v3 or v4), scooby sport downpipe, bigger HKS 450 HP upgrade, fuel pump, fuel rail, injectors, boost controller, Possum bourne link, etc.

This should kill a GSX with a boost controller..sure it'll cost a butt load..but it'll kill almost anything on the street

This was a joke..lol..to beat him, get a stage 2 turbo kit, crank the boost, get the tuning dialed in (and i mean DIALED) in, upgrade the tranny..this should beat him

In the end you still have 0.5L and a couple hundred pounds on the GSX. You'll need a

Nitrous is sounding tempting because then I won't tell the insurance company about it
Any other ideas?

I had both a 90 GSX and a 99 Impreza 2.5 until recently. I sold the GSX, but it is much faster, and as everyone here said before me, you need to boost the RS to have a chance!
With my 'stock' GSX (k&n air filter and boost controller) running at 10psi (~200hp) it is much faster than my RS (@6000 feet). With no other mods, than a boost controller the eclipses are good to boost to about 15psi or ~240hp.
When I bought the RS I new I wanted a car that'd be faster, and a little roomier. I've ridden in a bunch of cars with the JCS turbo setup ~5psi and they will beat the pants off of my 'stock' GSX. The GSX 'feels' faster because you feel the boost kick in about 3500-4000, whereas the ~5psi JC equipped cars (that I've ridden in) kick in so low you don't feel the boost come on, its just fast all around.

i can personally account for how fast a gsx is...we were in my boy's vr6 jetta w/ an intake and exhaust....i was looking in the rear view from shot....then i saw a white dot behind us....then all of a sudden the dot got bigger...then the next thing i know...i see an eclipse bumper like 10 car lengths ahead of us...my boy caught up...but the guy in the eclipse just smiled and down shifted...and we graciously bowed down to the mighty 4wd(or is it awd?.. i can't remember which one the gsx was)turbo

I thought I'd add my two cents here. I have a close friend with the gen 1 GSX and we've worked on his together as well as working on my impreza 01 rs.

I've dragged him a couple times and everytime I can take him by about a good car length up through the top end of 2nd gear and as soon as we kick into 3rd he slowly pulls past. There's no way I'm gonna beat him down the road without a turbo, but I'm happy being able to pull a whole car length in front of him off the line. Afterall, that's what the sube's known for right?

I'm also running a few pounds heavy with a custom built false floor subbox in my trunk. Just fyi.

As for power, suspension mods they're pretty simple: Custom Intake (larry's) (K&N), UR pulley, JC Sports Front tower strut, and Stromung exhaust.

Wow, I'm flattered . Just go for every bolt on you can find except for the borla header. I'm wondering if my custom job will be any better, but we'll see. If the GSX is modded, then you will have fits. They're easy to run 12's in.

Haven't had the priviledge of racing a GSX (1stgen) but have raced new GT model (v6) off the line. Technically I won, but the guy could not work his clutch because he spun too much. Either way, I pulled a car length and a half in front before the next light (75 yards), where he wouldn't race anymore!
Oh yeah, no mods here!!!...well a strut tower brace...but...I won!!

lostangel: He can't launch. Once he learns, you're dead meat.

watcher: You were racing a 2wd, no wonder you won.

check out http://www.crco.com/dragtimes/index.html for the NW DSM drag times. granted these are old, but it might give you some idea what you're up against. Shawn Jewett is pulling 12s with a full interior and a crush-bent exhaust; what's that say?

60' time stunk becuase of the slushbox, but after that, I was gone..
