You need to let us know what you want from your exhaust. What are your priorities: sound, looks, performance?
The two exhausts are VERY different. |

Sound and performance..
Performance, all will be close, although the Strohmung has been dynoed to be a bit higher than the rest as far as gains. Sound wise..i am really pleased with it. Although i just wish i was a bit meaner after 3000 rpms...regardless my intake kicks in there so it works out. matt |

I have the A'PEXi N1, nice muffler. REALLY LOUD, it drones a bit, but open windows, or the stereo drowns it out. Very nice deep tone.
Very free flowing, felt a nice gain on the high RPMs. Looks very nice on the RS. complements the huge fogs and hood scoops. here's a pic of mine: [This message has been edited by Jewbaru (edited October 17, 2000).] |

Mav, don't worry, it IS cheap. The muffler and the piping are both aluminized steel. I painted the muffler black with high temp paint. The original silver color really stood out from under the bumper and looked a little weird. I didn't really need stainless though, since we don't salt the roads here in the winter. It should last quite a while.
I will be the first to tell you that it ain't real pretty, but it works just fine. Very little interior resonance too. |

Actually, a MAJOR the reason why mufflers rust out is because of the condensation on the INSIDE. As the muffler cools, it condenses the water in it, which settles at the bottom, and rusts from the inside out. Not being in a climate where you get all the salt and crap on the road WILL help though. Just my $.02

I'd suggest getting an exhaust system custom made. Any reputable shop can bend the piping (go 2 1/4" if you wish to stay N/A or larger for a turbo). Then you get to pick out a universal muffler you want to go with i.e. Flowmaster, Borla, Apexi or even a lesser known one like I have, Naxxos. If it's too loud, you can have the shop weld in a resonator to quiet things down a bit. Shop around and get some estimates, it should range from $200 to no more than $300-350 tops. They're all gonna flow as well as the $600+ ones do +/- a few HP. Hope this helps.

R&D on a custom exhaust...hmmm why bother..you should already know what size you want by looking at what all these people overcharge for there exhausts.

do you want it to be loud??
best bet (IMO) is to go custom and have it made...it should be cheaper...the scooby sport exhaust is hella expensive. as well as the stromung is costly too and if you don't get the stainless stromung it looks like garbage after a year. |

Custom may cost less, but there's USUALLY no R&D involved...unless you just coppy what's out there. How much did custom cost you?
As for the Stromung, it IS a bit pricey, and it IS a little loud, but what sweet racket it is! And if you get stainless....you NEVER have to worry about the exhaust for the life of the car. |

If you are planning on just a cat-back exhaust (compared to headers, highflow cats, etc.), a local shop should be able to do a fine job. This isn't brain surgery, it a pipe with a few bends and a muffler. I'm not knocking the pre-fab systems out there, I'm sure they are very nice, but not worth the $$$ IMHO, especially on a N/A car.
What you decide depends on how much you want to spend. If money isn't a problem, then get what ever you want. But if money does play a factor, then buy the muffler you think best suits your needs based on sound level (how loud), sound quality, looks (stainless steel, carbon fiber, tin-foil), and cost. Then have a local muffler shop install it. The difference in performance is probably going to be very minimal. I paid about $300 total for my custom cat back and flowmaster muffler. I love it. http://216.242.153.40/MembersList/Us...lowmaster2.jpg |

Well, I must step into this one. I have just installed the ISR 3" cat back system and let me tell you. MY CAR HAS NEVER PERFORMED AS GOOD AS IT IS PERFORMING NOW. This exhaust not only looks and performs good, It sounds good. But yes, it is a 3" exhaust, but not to worry, We also installed the 2 1/4 cat back syste on a stock car and that, made his car pull much harder. We tried the Greddy, Tanabe Racing Medalion and the the ISR system, and felt the most gain and sounded the best with the ISR system. The tipps are angled up, DTM stlye, and to be honest when Pam told me that, I was like no way, never on my car, but now that I see it in person, Its BAD ASS. Give her a call and ask her about it. I will have pics in a few days.

I got my Stromung s.s. dual tip put on yesterday, I'm still waiting for the mid pipe to come in. But with the new muffler the car pulls a little more up top. But the sound is the best part. At highway speeds you can hardly hear it, but when you bring it up it loud, but not over powering. I love the sound, it ain't no Honda. They say the mid pipe will make it louder, I hope so. I love this system, and highly recommend it to all impreza owners.

I just ordered an Sti exhaust plus 2.25" midpipe from Mike Shields for ~$370 plus shipping. Entire unit is stainless steel and the reviews I've read from others has been great. Definite performance boost, yet quiet-- my two requirements. I think for the price you can't beat this system. Hope to receive and install this weekend and will post impressions.
