Default Got pulled over for the 3rd time, for modified exhaust but....

I dont have a modified exhaust. I have been pulled over twice in San Diego where I go to school, and once in Glendora just a couple days ago, where I am during the summer. I was driving back from getting lunch with my sister, got on the 57 north just before it turns to the 210, and could see a chp behind me. I had just got on the freeway and was going just about 65 so I wasnt too concerned but he instantly got behind me and got off the next off ramp with me. He still didnt have his lights on, so I turned right off the on ramp heading home, and so does he and sure enough after getting off he turns on his lights so I pull over. Well he comes up and asks for my license and registration, and I am wondering whats the deal. So he doesnt go back to his car with my info and says "I notice you got a nice little exhaust you put on there to make your car louder." I say its stock cause it is. And he starts saying I know what stock is, thats not stock, dont test me, etc etc. He then preceeds to say I was lucky there was a car in front of my after I got in the freeway cause he bets I would of kept accelerating because I didnt see him, which I did, but I never hit my brakes so I guess he figured I didnt. He then tells me not to test my car on his highways etc etc. So he decides to not write me up for exhaust, possibly because he realized he was wrong but I dont think so, gives me my stuff back, and says have a good day. He then comes walking back and tells me to pop the hood. So I do, and unsure whether he would open it ok, I got out to open it, and he quickly told me, I dont need you, get back into the car. Well since my car in completely stock except rims, everything under the hood was fine, and he closed it back up and then walked off again. Its getting really annoying to be pulled over soo many times. Is there something I can get to prove my exhaust is stock or something so I can't get harassed like this? Just wanted to share my story. My sister was almost laughing during all of this. She herself has a 2003 white wrx with a modified exhaust, but she never gets pulled over. Is it the sti wing or what? Its such bs because the stock sti exhaust is so damn quiet and he is telling me he could here it when I am on the freeway and he has his windows up. Talk about profiling based on car. Please comment, I would like to hear from you all.

there is nothing you can do about it, the simple fact is, they have no clue what is stock, what is modify. The stock STi exhaust have a nice big tip that say STi on the side with a silver muffler can, it sure does look aftermarket. If you really want, you can spray paint the muffler black to make it more stealth. I wonder if this is the reason why the 05' STi muffler is black.

profiling happen on everything in life, just the way it is.

I guess the best thing you can do is bring a copy of the offical STi brochure from Subaru with you, when you get pull over, just hand that to the cop.

Ferrari Enzo ----> movie producer that have cocaine for lunch, proceed with caution since he might be playing golf with the chief of police this afternoon.
STi/EVO -------> ricer, nothing on the car is stock, run no cat., don't pass smog.
64' Impala ------> hardcore gangstar, look for guns......

even if you are not the typical owner, cops will still assume you are.

I believe that the way cops look at your car and what they are encountering depends solely on the age of the officer.

I was pulled over by a cop who owned a Mustang cobra (he later told me)...he knew exactly what my car was all about and was very cool. We ended up talking horsepower....

I agree, there are always exception to everything.

I got pull over once in the STi with the cruise control set to 80 mph on the fast lane on the freeway (I was falling asleep because it feels SO SLOW, 80 is the best I can do in trying to comply with the speed limit law ) All he gave me was a fix it ticket for no front plate Turns out the officer is a Subie fan, he loves the STi

If I was truly runnin' stock AND I had the time, I would challenge him then and there to prove his claim...i.e. have him impound the car and make him prove his claim...really make him go to the mat, and then make him look like the idiot he is.

Many CHP officers are good guys, but idiots like this guy need to be put in his place!

Years ago I had a similar encounter with a noob officer...after getting hassled for my tinted plexi windows, he wanted to bust my chops for the dual quads, which at that time were exempted...I admitted to the windows, but I challenged him to impound the car and "go for it" on the emissions stuff. Cooler heads prevailed, as his training officer told him to back off and let me go! I knew I was right, and if it went all the way, I figured anytime I got hassled in the future, I could claim harrassment.

I'll probably get flamed for the some of this, but when you're right, you need to show them who's right!

Wow! People on this board would risk having their cars impounded, rifled through and mauled just to be right. Amazing.

If you're all stock, what have you got to lose? As Mordy 2v said, you've got to stand up for yourself!

I agree to your point, but it is just too much hassle and time to hassle the cop back. It is definitely fun to prove a cop wrong though.

if you still have the little STi brochure that came in your glovebox when the car was new, just whip that out and show him the pictures of the exhaust tip in there to prove that its' stock. You can also educte him on the other differences between the STi and standard WRX. :P

Otherwise just deal with it and be polite.

Yep! I got pulled over too - "profiled" over in La Puente near Azusa & 60 fwy. Complete stock STi ... Sherif said same thing "you modified the exhaust?" - I said nope - that's stock - also made me open the hood - Luckily he did not giv me any tickets .....mmmm..... I'm thinking I'm going to carry the WRX STi brochure from Subaru ... I think that one has some pics of the muffler ..... hope the cops can compare the 2 and match....

Here is my advice, but use your head first.

If you get pulled over for something lame like speeding, or an exhaust and the cop is being a dick, just let him know that he is being rude, and you would hate to have to report his badge number and file a complaint.

A cop MUST be polite and tell you to have a nice day. If you file a complaint about him being rude for something as simple as a traffic stop it makes it VERY hard for them to get promotions later on.

Of course if you are sitting on an ounce in the car, keep your mouth shut, casue a complaint from someone getting charged with possesion/trafficing don't mean a thing...

thats exactly what I did when I got pulled over. He thought my exhaust and my boost gauge werent stock so I had to pull the brochure and the window sticker just to prove to that moron that my car was stock....

get an STi press package and carry the booklet around in your glovebox so you can show the dumbass what is stock... then tell him to **** off as he's walking back to his car....

it's the wing... cops get behind me and stare at my EVO looking for something even though I still have dealer tags on it... I never got so much as a look in my catless WRX with the HKS fartcan.

LOL... funny unrelated note AWJunkies Adam got pulled over on our way to Harman Motive in a convoy of 8 cars because the cop thought his car was stolen. Gutted interior... LOL

Some cops are just retarded. Once I got stopped over for having clear taillights in my '95 Accord (back in the high school days), and the guy called for backup and two extra cars showed up. I've been living in Irvine for the past few years, and the cops here are Nazis. I guess it makes me a better driver, but it would be nice to be able to just drive home in peace without being worried of being pulled over for some BS just so a cop can fill up his quota in a city with one of the lowest crime rates in the country.

San Marino Cops used to harass me all the time. By circling around my car, shine the beotch light, block me from making lane change, sandwich me with 2 big SUVs and combo beotch light me left and right... not to mention they wrote me a speeding ticket while I was 10mph slower than speedlimit when I still have the WRX.

If it makes you feel better, a cop pulled me over when I was driving my 92' Dodge Caravan. He made me pop the hood. (I have no idea what he was looking for. the thing only has 3.3 litres of fury!)

The van had a Flowmaster muffler on it, and for some reason, the officer assumed it had no muffler. I told him, it's in the middle of the van. He told me that was the catalytic converter. I asked him to look under the van. So, we get down and I pointed out the cat and the muffler.

He let me go, obviously, but said that I need to put the stock muffler back on. Saw the cop a few months later at the shopping center while walking, and he asked me if my van had gotten any quieter. "Nope! Sure hasn't officer!"

I got pulled on the way to Harman dyno day too by a young CHP. I have an 04 White/Gold STI with a Greddy evo2 which is Carb legal. I was on the 405 just near Western in #2 lane going 55 with the flow of traffic. I'm 37. He asked me if i knew why he pulled me to which I answered no. He told me it was my exhaust. I told him it was CARB legal. He said "Is it noise legal?". I said "Yes". He took my license and reg and then asked me to start the car and gun it. He looked at me and my two 38 year old friends and then told me to go. Total waste of time.

I've had this car 4 months. I've got 1 speeding ticket, been pulled 2 further times and been shadowed countless times. My last 2 cars were a Dark Green 996 w/ GT3 body kit and a BRG BMW M Coupe--not low key cars. I never got a ticket in either of those or was even pulled or shadowed in 5 years.

I'm loving the car and actually kind of enjoy the looks I get from the cops when they see I'm not the "typical" driver for this car, but the added attention is really beginning to piss me off
