Default Gearbox noise?

Anyone else get alot of gearbox noise on their turbo baja? I never really paid attention until people started commenting that they thought there was a siren behind us... Mainly when accelerating hard or decelerating using the gears but always sort of there?

Manual.

Yeah, in my experience whine = uh-oh as well but the STi guys and XT guys report similar noise. I'm taking it in anyway, I'll report my fluid findings...

When you take your foot off the gas pedal, you'll hear a Blow Off Valve (BOV) letting the gas out of the turbo system. All modern turbos do that. Baja uses a turbo with an integrated BOV (manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industry), and it doesn't sound as "nice" as other aftermarket BOV. It sounds almost like a grinding, or bad bearing rolling. If that's the sound you are hearing, it is, unfortunately, a normal sound for Subaru. You can find good threads under 2.5 litter turbo forum.

On the other hand, I noticed more audible gear box whine (not the turbo spooling) at the lower rpm, than my old Impreza did. Is that Legacy specific whine? Or just on 2.5 litter turbo gearbox? I hope it's normal as well, but it does sound like WRCar in video.

Unfortunately, I'm still breaking her in so I haven't really gotten into the turbo yet enough to have any release to atmosphere

But yeah it's definitely in the gearbox, reminds me of when I used to drive dumptrucks in high school...

Since 1 Kmls I have a scratching, purring noise from the gearbox, depending on motor-rpm. It appears when releasing the clutch (you can hear it also idling) and was getting louder within some days.
Went to the dealer and he listened to: one of the 3 bearings of the main-axle in the gearbox seems to be broken. HeŽll fix it.
As the baja has now more than 107 Kmls, we will change the clutch too...
Regards
Chris
