Legacy Questions about my new Legacy Outback

I just bought a 1997 Legacy Outback Limited and have a few questions.

First, I'm curious as to whether my car is equipped with remote keyless entry or not. I don't have the fob, so I'm not sure. I do know that the ignition key will not unlock the passenger door. Whether that's indicative of Outbacks (or Subarus) in general or is an indication that it is in fact equipped with remote keyless entry or not, I don't know. I just don't want to go wasting my time looking for places to buy a new remote fob only to find out that I don't even have keyless entry.

Second, since I live in an area of the county where six months out of the year there's snow on the ground, I want to buy a set of snow tires to use during that period. The tires themselves aren't a problem; it's the wheels. I'm having a hell of a time finding steel 15" wheels for that car. Places are only interested in selling me alloys, which are, in my opinion, a complete waste of time and money for snows. I'd like to know about good places to find steel wheels that will fit this car.

Third, as I'm kind of a part time gearhead, I'd like to know any good places that I could purchase higher quality parts. I believe that there's no reason that one shouldn't at least look into squeezing a few more ponies and ft*lbs out of their car, regardless if the fact that they won't actually be racing it. I plan to keep the car roughly stock. Here's the parts I've put on my "Things I Should Look Into Putting in the Suby List:"

- After-cat exhaust
- Headers
- Better intake
- Lightened underdrive pulleys (not smaller; I want the accessories to work normally)

I'm after parts that aren't terribly expensive and will keep the car operating in a way that it's livable for day to day driving. Where should I look for this stuff? I've only found one halfway decent place on the internet, and they sell mostly racing parts.

Thanks (in advance) for your advice.

1). Probably although I don't think the key is an indication of anything other than the door lock is busted or you are using the valet key. A subaru dealer should be able to look at your VIN and tell you what it should have had.

2). Tire Rack or Discount Tire should get you what you need. Why do you care if they sell you alloys at a reasonable price instead of steel wheels?

3). I would search the 2.5N/A section to get an idea of what you want to do and then search the vendors section to get it.

Good luck.

I read that the ignition key will only open the driver door on that car. Why it is that Subaru added that "feature" is completely beyond me; I can't see any reason at all to do it like that.

As for getting alloys as opposed to steels, I was looking to spend $50-$75 each, not $125-$200. They're snows. They don't have to look nice. I suppose if I absolutely have to get alloys, that's what I'll do, but I'd imagine you can see my point.

I'll have to hit up he forums for parts like you said.

Thanks for your advice.

Check out junk yards. My Outback Sport came with Steels on it.

I'll have to poke around more. Unfortunately, Outback Sport wheels won't work; the Sport's actually base on the Impreza and thus has 14" wheels. Someone told me that lower trim Legacy's have steel wheels. I need ones that will fit 205/70R15's. 15x6.5 wheels will do it, if I recall. Can anyone confirm this?
