Question MY98 2.5RS-T / MY98-01 SportWagon Hybrid/Conversion

After browsing the "Calling all Wagons" thread, I had a vision of a MY98-01 Impreza L Wagon with some aftermarket extras. I currently have my totalled MY98 RS-T that I could pull parts from and I am searching for a good used MY98-01 Impreza L Wagon. This sounds to me like a good plan but I thought I would ask the experts and find out if I am going to be getting myself in some hot water by swapping the motor/transmission from my 98RS-T to a 98-01 Impreza L wagon. Would this conversion be possible and what possible issues would/could I run into. Would it be advised to buy a car with an automatic and swap it to a manual transmission?

All feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Anyone? I found a MY99 L wagon that has a blown motor and messed up transmission that I could get for a good price. Need some feed back. What do you guys think?

I can source you a fairly clean MY95 L wagon for cheap. ~ $2700 or so.

PM me and I'll talk to my friend who's selling it. It's in Minneapolis.

Default MY96-98 Wagon

You best bet for an easy swap is to get an MY96-98 wagon for these cars all use the exact same wiring harness as the MY98 DOHC 2.5 so it's a direct plug and play engine swap. There is no wiring it's all mechanical. The ecu will plug right in from the RS and the engine harness will plug right into the fire wall. Having had a MY98 RS-T and now currently having a 2.5L Wagon Turbo I can truely vouche for this. Feel free to contact me.

Yebokmj- Thanks for your response. So if I understand you correctly, if I find a 98 Impreza L wagon, I can just pull the motor/trans from my totaled MY98 RS-T and bolt it into the Wagon and I am done with the exception of the turbo timer and fuel managment system? if that is the case, I may be in business afterall. Man I was begining to think I was without options. Did you by chance upgrade your wagon with the ABS system from your RS? I have been thinking about it and was wondering if it was possible/practical. Would you have any internal/external pictures of your 2.5Turbo Wagon I could see? Gosh.. I need to step up my search for my car now so I can get this idea in motion. I will keep in touch.

RS25Tuner,
You have the right idea but it can be a MY96 &97 as well. I have heard that ABS if it's not from the factory is pretty much impossible to install. If you want ABS you will be looking for an ouback sport. Don't forget to do a brake upgrade from the RS either way front and rear. http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~jmkobey/ has some pictures of my wagon and my old RS-T. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of it with the 2.5 in the wagon.

Yebokmj- I have a few questions/comments. Btw.. Thanks for the link to your car. I like what you have done!

1. Is the outback sport the same as the Impreza L as far as the exterior goes? I donít think I have ever seen an OBS with a solid color paint job. I donít really like the two-tone look and I donít think I would want to repaint an entire car just to get ABS. If I have to I will just do the rear disk break conversion and leave it at that.

2. The ABS unit did come from the factory on the RS but I donít know if it could be transferred over to an L without great effort, pain, and suffering. ABS just makes me feel better when I in an emergency breaking situation. Have you ever heard of anyone converting the ABS from an RS to an L?

3. How did you get the rear windows / door locks to work with the L when the RS came with two doors? I was looking at some wiring diagrams and it seems that the rear windows and locks will already be plugged in and I donít have anything to worry about since the wiring harness is the same.

4. If I am only able to find a car with an automatic transmission, will I be able to convert it to a 5MT without much difficulty or should I just keep searching until I find a 5MT?

5. Would you know what Impreza L's came with Gray interior? I would love to convert an Acadia Green Impreza L to replace my RS but all I have found for sale is Acadia green with tan interior. I have a ton of gray parts that can be used from my RS that I would love to use.

6. Will my RS side shirts fit the Impreza L?

Thanks for taking a look at this. I hope to find something soon so I can get back on the road again.

Thanks for the completments, The website is far from updated as you can tell from the lack of the 2.5 motor. Here's my answer to you questions:
1: The ouback sport will always be the 2 tone colors but always has the gray interior you like. There was an LX impreza wagon available in MY96 only in automatic that came with ABS and a single color. I think white and black have tan interior and the rest are gray.
2: There was a post in this forum recently about doing an ABS upgrade to a non ABS car. I didn't ready it but all past questions of it have said it's a no go.
3: I don't understand the question, your not touching the wiring harness of the car at all. You will no do any wiring in this swap if you buy the MY96-98 impreza.
4: You should be able to convert and automatic to a 5psd pretty easy especially where you have the doner car right there.
5: check out this page it's pretty helpful : http://www.cars101.com/impreza_archi...1996%20impreza
6: Yes the side skirts will transfer though you will need to drill mounting holes.
Hope this helps,
Feel free to IM me if you need questions cleared up.

Yebokmj- thanks for you response. I have another question. I was looking online tonight and I found a 96 LX wagon that might work out if it is still available. But my question is this.

1. MY98 RS is digital odometer and the MY96LX is mechanical. How do I convert mechanical wiring to work with digital wiring that is set up to run my MY98 instrument panel.

2. I am unsure how the center console in the 96, which is an automatic, would work with the 98 rs center console that is manual. I know the two consoles are different but I donít know if they share similar parts.

Thanks,

RS25Tuner,
I think your still not understanding me. You wouldn't be changing the instrument panel because there is no need, you will not be touching the wiring of the car at all. You will remove one engine and unplug the three Large connectors that connect the engine harness to the firewall harness, you will then place in the other engine and plug in the three connectors from that engine to the firewall harness. You will then go the passenger side and pull back the carpet, remove the ecu cover and un-bolt the ecu and dissconnect if from the harness fo the car. You will now take the 2.5 ECU and plug it into the harness.

As to the question about the consol it won't matter just remove the automatic transmition, then remove the automatic shift lever and associated parts and replace them with the parts from the RS manual transmition.

I don't know when you will be doing this but you still seem a bit confused, you should IM me or send me a PM for my phone number so we can talk. If your not doing this for another month I might be able to lend a hand for there is a 90% chance that I will be moving to NC begining of Sept. I will hopefully know in a week or so.

Yebokmj- there is no confusion here now after reading your last message. I did understand what you wrote the first time but I think I was lost in a brain fart when I asked the first question from my last post. I just have read so many different threads taking about so many things I did get lost in the details for a moment. I am still debating on if I should buy a 98 outback sport and just repaint it to a solid color to get my ABS option and to allow me to use other interior parts from my 98RS or if I should just go with a 96-98 impreza sport wagon and just do the rear disk brake conversion and go without the abs option. Thanks for you response again and let me know if you move to NC. I donít know if I will have the car conversion done before then or not but if you do move down if we have to have a turbo sport wagons meet!
Thanks,

LEGOS...

As for the ABS, many guys disable it because it is too active for most people's tastes with real hard driving. Personally, I would swap over your RS brakes and calipers along with some stainless lines, good pads and dot4 fluid and call it done...

Matt - Thanks for the advise. I am starting to think I should go that route. After I saw BlackStar's Wagon, I knew I wanted to build a wagon. Now my trouble is finding a suitable 96-98 wagon. Wish me luck.

Found a possible doner car... 98 OBS... I haven't seen the car yet but I have a question, does the 98 OBS come with rear disks? If not, would my 98 RS rear disks work with the existing ABS system that is on the 98 OBS. I am hoping to buy this 98 OBS mostly for the ABS that is on the car. If anyone knows this answer, please let me know.

Hi again,
The OBS only had rear disks in MY96 the rest of the years are drum brakes. You RS rear disk breaks will swap on fine and retain the ABS. Oh and I am deffinately moving to NC now, I will be living in Durham as of Sept. 8th so I can lend a hand if your near by, are you in my area?

if you can stick with the same year the interior plugs should all fit right up. That would make the wiring practically nill.

RS25Tuner...
The OBS is probably a better starting point, considering you've already got your RS from which to pilfer rear brakes, but if that falls through, a 96 LX would be a great choice because it's got ABS and 4 wheel discs.

there are others w/ rear discs but they're hard to find and they may only be 93-95... There was a safety package w/ ABS and rear discs that Subaru offered on the L's. Aspen_2.5RS has one of these L's (it's a 95).
