i had an 89, so i don't know how much of my experience applies to you..

cool frikkin' car. mine had 5-speed, dual range fulltime 4x4, lockable center diff.

that thing would go anywhere, and do it quickly. i bought mine with 118k miles on it. it had belonged to a doctor's wife since it was new and at 118k it blew a headgasket so i bought it with a rebuilt motor. however it quickly developed exhaust leaks at the manifold and i found out that some of the studs had already been replaced, leaving me without many options other than to just run with the leak.

don't know much about the 86, but i assume you'll still need to watch out for headgasket and exhaust manifold problems..

Being an 86... it may or may not be an actual RX... if its a coupe its probably just a turbo coupe... could be an RX sedan... either way being an 86 its proably part time 4WD dual range with 3:70 gears and I think... a 1.1 to 1 low range (as opposed to more reduction on other older subarus)

Being an 86 it will not be Fulltime 4WD w/diff lock but rather Part Time 4WD (FWD, 4WD Hi, 4WD Lo), it does still have the rear LSD, though. Also, the 1986 models are lighter than the newer ones (1986 RX Sedan is 2520 lbs according to the 1986 Subaru Service Manual).

If you see pics of the white (or in rare cases black) RXs, those are the 1987+ models. The 85-86 is virtually indistinguishable in appearance from a GL-10 sedan other than the "RX" badging...

i built my 86 from the firewall forward, i love the car. im about to upgrade everythingunder the hood shortly. ill be putting in a wrx td04 turbo, wrx intercooler, xt "spider" intake manifold, xt6 throttle body, wrx down pipe, 2.5" catback exhaust. and then i am going to try for a custom header tha should turn out simular to the borla ej22 style header. all in all, it should be fun to do and drive when im done. the only problem is going to be funding.

Not stock, but you can change that with some creativity

concerning the exhaust studs, i heli-coiled all of the tapped holes on the exhaust ports of my ea82 when i had it apart. that has helped keep them from stripping..
