Post Hello all I'm from the bay area and . . .

I was just wondering if anyone had a turbo conversion on their Impreza? I mean I'm thinking about buying this car. (the red one on the VW lot on Capitol Expwy Auto Mall) And I just wanted to make sure that I could actually make some real power with this car for under $5K.

Check out the Sport Compact Car write-up on the car. That is Shiv's private car. He is a local from Danville and is a moderator around here. Also, use the links for the tuning houses on the site to see what is being done in the aftermarket.
You probably won't get any other answers to your thread. People around here expect you to do your own research( plus I am one of maybe 5 Bay Area members who aren't flogging their cars at Thnderhill Raceway today.)
The short answer is yes! Anywhere from 220-400hp is possible with this car

Cool

I just installed a Minnam Stage II and Tec and love it. At a very conservative (my blow off valve is back ordered) 3-5lbs my car hauls ass through every gear.

Plan on 8-10k for everything you need (clutch, install time, random tools, brakes).

Any specific qustions?

cheers,

angus

Angus: you installed this turbo yourself? I thought that the minnam stage 2 was only $4200? And what type of power do you think you're putting out at the wheels?

Angus: Did you happen to go to the most recent mini meet that was at Great Mall with the Celicas? See I own a silver GTS and I was at that meet, admiring your groups cars non-the-less. I think I might have seen you and yours.

$5950 for turbo and tec-II

Call it 6. I installed it myself, with some trouble shooting from Shiv and the board.

Add this:
ACT clutch and install, Oil pan nipple, oil pump, oil cooler, bigger brakes etc etc and you're on your way. Plus tools and time off work and the cost adds up. It was worth it.

As far as horsepower, I don't have a figure. I know it's rare that I meet a car on El Camino Real I can't take. Shiv was with me when I rocketed by a Z28 in Danville while we were tuning the car, they gave us a big look and thumbs up.

To put it another way-I have a ton more go than stop.

I wasn't at the Mini-meet.

What happens if you add the Stage II to an automatic?

Just curious what sort of HP the automatic transmission is rated for.

<-- Wife can't drive a stick, and I'd feel like a heal if I bought a car she couldn't drive.

Yeah, that's about right.

SunnyJohn: the limiting factor in the automatic is not hp (or torque) per se, rather it's the temperature of the fluid and service interval of the friction materials. Kevin Thomas and others have shown that the auto is good for a few glorious moments with forced induction or NOS at a dragstrip. Whether it will stand up to 5 laps at Thunderhill under boost is an entirely different question.

It has been said that the Impreza automatic is quite similar to the 4-speed auto used in the SVX. That unit handled 200+ ft*lbs of torque, but had a nasty overheating problem where you had to replace a bunch of seals (i.e., complete rebuild) if the temp exceeded a certain level.

If you think about the way a torque converter works, it makes sense. Some relatively fixed percentage of the engine power is lost as heat due to fluid viscosity. If you increase the engine power, you also increase the heat losses.

Those who came to Thunderhill noticed me running around like all 6 billion members of an F1 pit crew combined after pulling off the track. Every three or four laps, with increasing frequency as the day got hotter, I would pull off and rush to spray down the tranny and get moving again before the brakes warped. Last time I was at T-Hill in 97 degree weather I had ATF spurting out of the breather valve and onto the exhaust manifold, so I figured better safe than sorry this time. It's one hell of a long track.

Necro,

What are you running on your automatic?

Is it just the fact that you are running "all-out" for five laps at T-Hill, or do you have some mods that really work out the automatic transmission?

If the manual is just a better transmission, then maybe I would be better off (as far as the car is concerned) getting the manual and teaching my wife how to drive... scary as that thought might be.

It would save me $800 too.

(If transmissions are the same, a happy wife is $800 well spent.)
