Default Name this Noise (Broken Engine)

Okay so my engine doesn't sound so healthy. I'm not sure what it is. A little back round on the engine. It's a DOHC 2.5 running a stock 2.5 Phase II block MY00 or newer. I had some problems with the valves in the past when I did a headgasket, but they were all eventually put into spec. Two months later when I put the new block in they were still to spec. Since the new block it's been about 12,000miles. I also did a compression check yesterday and all the cyclinders were 180-187. On first crank the pressure on all cyclinders was about 120.
Listen and enjoy.
Sounds of music

Have you checked the timing belt tensioner? I can't tell from the recording but it sounds like scraping and knocking. Check the inside of the front timing belt cover for scuffs/wear. Timing belt tensioners can make noises that scare you.

2cents.

I'm going to open the cover today. I did put in a new tensioner when I did the new block though. I'll post and update.

yeah, the second one sounds characteristic of ticking valves. I can't tell what you got going on in the first one. It almost sounds like rod knock or something, or like the pistons are slapping around in there. Also, it sound uneven, as if its losing compression. I wonder if u blew a piston ring or something?

Wow... that's a pretty scary sound. I'm going to go with something in the lower end, valvetrain noises are very even consistent sounds and not that scary. Do you have a boost gauge? is the needle fluctuating? How much blowby are you getting in your oil?

So I found out what it is or at least part of it. I took off my timing belt cover and it was filled with timing belt shavings. The timing belt was missing huge chunks. So I stared the engine with the belt off and I could see play in the water pump pulley. Once I took the belt off I was able to move the water pump pulley 1/4 of an inch up and down side to side. The strange part is that I haven't had any coolant loss or over heating. I am going to replace the pump and I think it will solve all my problems. I think my vavles also my have been out of adjustment slighty due to the timing belt being out of wack. I'm going to check the clearances of the shims while I have things apart.

Check the toothed tensioner while you are in there... the bearings like to fail in them and make the timing belt skip teeth. I had this happen once... had to replace all 4 exhaust valves in the pass. head. :-/

I was just about to say that sounds like a water pump gone bad. I had that happen on an old pontiac(not the same as a subie), but it made the same horrible scraping/grinding noises. It didn't overheat or anything.

How do I gauge if other pulleys should be replaced? I can wiggle some of them a little but how much is to much?

wiggle them and see if they move (with the timing belt off) and also spin them to make sure they spin smooth with no nasty noises or anything like that..... it's just bearings in there, so you're just making sure the bearing is still good.

Yeah with the timing belt off the wiggle a tinny bit but spin smooth and don't make noise, so that means they are fine?
