Default 3.0R Outbacks

Anyone here driven the new 3.0R Outbacks. Either the sedan or wagon. Seems to me since this engine has the same HP as the turbo's, this engine should work better with an auto gearbox.

I'm looking to trade in my 5-speed wagon for an auto Subie in the future.
Been driving nothing but stick for the last 24 years. An auto gearbox with the manual controls on the steering with good power would be a good fit for my driving style. And I'm not looking to modify the car. My wagon is completely stock except for some new Michellin tires.

The only thing I really don't like is the fact that the 3.0 is only offered in the Outback models which are higher off the ground due to the springs. And weigh more than the Legacy sedans and wagons. What's the difference between the Legacy's and Outbacks??? I guess the Outback's are made to be a little more off-road.

Wished the Legacy also had that engine choice available if i decided the 3.0 would be better for me with an auto.

My biggest beef with the Outback 3.0R is the sedan.
It looks extremely ackward. In the wagon the raised suspension and such looks okay, but in the sedan, it looks like an aftermarket thought by someone wishing to offroad his car.
It surely doesn't look natural.

As for the 3.0R engine and the auto. Yes, I'd have to agree. If you don't like turbo lag an automatic tranny in the 2.5T is not for you.
But don't think the 3.0R will perform as well. It might FEEL a whole lot better having smooth power throughout the rpm range, but with a lot less torque and more weight than the 2.5T engine, it's going to be a bit behind.
Same goes for handling. The 6 is surely heavier, and therefore weight distribution will be more skewed.

I'm not quite sure why Subaru doesn't offer the 3.0 liter in the Legacy.
Personally it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for those wanting exactly what you want.

Drive both the 3.0R with the auto and the 2.5T in the Legacy GT with the auto.
See what you think.

The 3.0R will cost significantly more too.
You are going to have to weigh the pros and cons and see which you prefer.

i drove the 2004 outback sedan 2.5 n/a, 2005 outback wagon 2.5 n/a, and the outback 3.0 sedan auto tonight.

the 2004 is a mangy dog but, ok for traffic. not much pickup from start and no midrange. the seat was ok but needed to travel back a little further, i'm 5'11" or was that 5'10" (i'm getting older and shrinking). cornering and ride are a little looser than the 2005.

the 2005 2.5 outback wagon auto is a dog but, takes off a little quicker than the 2004. still no midrange. cornering and the ride are the same as the 3.0 but it felt a little "twitchier", kind of like it was "riding above the road" instead of on or connected to it.

the 2005 3.0 sedan has a smooth six (with no cold winter tapping) the auto is smooth and doesn't seem to creep in slow traffic. cornering is pretty flat and the ride is controlled. i like sitting up higher to spit down on people (don't need a tall suv). at pickup a roar from under the hood can be heard. it has plenty of 0-30 takeoff to make a left into traffic. the power is down lower (not a v8) than the other engines. you'll regret paying all that money but nothing else. it should cruise effortlessly at 80-90 all day, my 2001 l.l. bean did.

the only thing that sux is the price. unfortunately i have to lease to buy later.

also drove the gt auto a couple weeks ago. i'm not into the "turbo thing" anymore. even with the active valve control it still has a small amount of 3,000 rpm burst, nowhere near as bad as the wrx.

i had a 2001 3.0 l.l. bean before the wrx and liked it a lot. it was a wagon and i didn't need all the space. i was a foolish to a buy wrx.

so in a week i'll have the 2005 3.0 outback sedan. garnet red!

you really need to take them all for ride.

if you don;t liek driving stick then i'll be your personal choufer , if only i can drive the new turbo GT.

i saw that gnarly new 3.0R it looks like an outback on steriods and is probably so loose in the corners it feels like a mad-cow. although it does look sorta' cool , but then again i like beastly cars

the 3.0r outback sedan is NOT loose in the corners. it corners almost (95%) as good as the gt. i was very surprised!

MO MONEY, MO MONEY, MO MONEY.

they want you to buy the upper models.

also look at the color choices for the exterior and interior.
