Question kuhmo ecsta MX vs. falken azenis

i'm looking for a set of tires to replace my corded re92's on stock wheels. these tires will be used primarily for autox and some limited track use. they might also be used for an occasional long road trip. at the last autox, i noticed the amazing number of people that were using the azenis but when i mentioned track day use for tires, he said to go with the mx's. he said the azenis have a tendancy to heat up and lose grip after a short period of time. even after each run he made on HIS azenis, he would spray them down with water to cool them back down to about 120 degrees. my question is this, would i be better off with the MX's for autox and a couple track days, or should i just stick w/ the azenis because i'm not really looking to set any records on the track. if anyone has any other suggestions for good tires for the uses mentioned above that are under 100 apiece, please let me know. no R compounds though, i'd like to stay in SM class. also, what size should i get for the stock wheels........still 205/55/16? thanks. -phil (enter key broken)

with the Azenis at the track, once they overheat, they will start chunking, wearing extremely quickly, and then once they have cooled again, they won't be as sticky as before. The Azenis are fairly sensitive to heat but sticky as all get-out before they overheat.

You can put 225/50-16 on the stock rim. Unfortunately, the Azenis Sport only come in 205/55-16 or a very short 215/45-16.

The Kumho MX is currently in short supply in 225/50 and 205/55. I couldn't find them anywhere (on-line or locally) and couldn't wait 4 weeks to get them, so I went with my second choice, the Azenis.

The Azenis will really do better in the wider size (215-45-16) and on a lighter car like a 2.5RS. I don't agree that they'll chunk, however. They would feel a bit slippery as they heat up on the track, but they do so gradually and are still quite predictable. I ran them on the track on a 2.5RS that ran 50% stiffer springs and was lightened to 2700lbs weighed at the track. I never had any difficulties with the Azenis. Track tires (used some yoko 032's) will be significantly stickier, but will of course not last nearly as long at the Azenis, nor would they last nearly as long.

I also ran Azenis 225-45-17's on a 2000 S4, which is way heavier and has a lot more power. The tires immediately felt slippery, but again were predictable and did not chunk at all. I ran them on this car from new without problems.

The nice thing with Azenis is that they are cheap, won't fall apart on the track and can be run for a decent distance on the street. I have a racecar now with Hoosiers and am not looking forward to tire replacement time. I'm quite happy that the car came with 6 hoosiers and 2 sets of other wheels/tires!

Definately, I've run the MX on my car all summer and they hold very well in "other than ideal" conditions compared to some stories I've heard about the Falken. Honestly, the falken is probably a better autox tire and will serve it's purpose well, but won't hold up like a Kumho on longer, hotter runs.

I think the Falkens suck compared to the MX's. Completely.
If I had the $$$ for new tires right now, I'd ****can the Falkens with ~3k miles on 'em and get either the MX's or 451's.....and I wouldn't even feel bad about throwing the Azenis away....

I am running MX on my wrx currently. I considered the azenis too but decided on the mx because they seem liked a better all around tire, IMHO . Gave up some auto-x ability but seemed better for track, street, better wear and they are lightweight too.
