True HID conversion- Cheap!
We just finished a true HID conversion on the 2000 RS here at The Radio Station. You have got to see it to believe that the parts are only about $400. I'll post details and pictures if needed and the bugs get worked out. Steve

I think I see HIDs in the future of my RS. How hard are they to install?
Edit: Is there a possibility of a group buy? Or would it not even help for the pricing? Either way, that is one heck of a price for HID [This message has been edited by Andrew (edited November 01, 2000).] |

I have seen in the e-bay (just last week) a true HID kit for 530, normally MSRP is 620. But 400 sounds very good to me too!!!!!
Um....are you using the philips kit??? gnome The only bad thing is we can't have High beam if we don't do the head light conversion!!!! HID ALL THE TIME!!!! |

True about the highs, so far I don't miss them! The light quality is incredible, my fogs look like there running off a D battery!I'm getting a Subaru wiring diagram today- I still have Hi flash when the light switch is off. The parts price is from Ford or Lincoln at a discount, list is about $550. The install was VERY easy, just trim the housing slightly, drill two holes each side and modify the rubber boot slightly. The ballast fit without too much effort. I'll work on pics- don't have a digital camera. I could probably do the install in about two hours. E mail me directly with any specific questions, I'll try to reply ASAP

I went down and saw this bad ass conversion today. All I gots' to say is GODDAM! I'll be dropping my new housings off when they come in!
Steve: I'll try and remember to pack up my laptop and web cam so we can snap a few pics... maybe you could offer to do the conversion for parts/labor with a core charge of the customers' housings... I'll work up an install doc for ya if you decide to do it. |

Chuck- Thanx for the offer to help with the doc's, you know how I am with computers (but let me loose with a soldering iron or nibbler!)I really want to get the pics up for the rest of the Sube world. You know- I'm probably the oldest guy on this board, I'm honored to still be a soobie newbie! TTYL, Steve

If you want HID lighting and want to keep your high beams, there's a company, Bell of HID that sells kits (one specifically made for Subarus). It actually replaces BOTH the high and low beams with HID lighting. It's about twice the cost but you do, in effect, get two sets of HIDs

Chuck- thank you very much! Hope these pics help the rest of the Soobie community. The answer is yes- you loose your Hi's. I just got an e-mail from an engineer at Osram ( makes the Lincoln parts used here) Says the beam pattern of a standard lamp housing won't direct the light correctly and the cost to engineer housings to US spec is the real issue. I'm very satisfied with the beam spread and height and HAVE NOT been brighted once!I suppose that like all mods, we must accept the risk for our own vehicle. I think the benefits are very worthwhile. Steve

I did some research just now- Could this major improvement in lighting really be illegal here in the US? None of the listed kits are truly plug and play. We should be able to provide connectors for Soobies that would make wiring plug right in. Somebody would still have to modify the housing. Anybody from other makes know of interest in this product? Steve
