Lightbulb changing the illumination color from green to blue????Got an idea, sorta..

ok, i saw this on VWVORTEX.COM, is there any way to do this, like the way they do it on VW GTIs. i saw them use those little colored tabs from file folder things to change the color of the LCD mileage/trip from green to red. read further down to see about the blue.

this is the mod instructions:

Pretty neat idea. Is there such a thing as colored overhead transparencies? That would be even easier.

you could change the color of the bulbs, which when mixing with the green plastic form the dash, could make some interesting colors. that's all i've heard of for changin that, though

if its a green film, wouldn't you just need a yellow bulb? green+yellow=BLUE right.

Blue + Yellow = Green

Light is made of a spectrum of three primary colors, RGB; Red, Green and Blue. Light is additive color where print is subtractive. In print you have CMYK; Cyan Magenta Yellow and Black. In print, adding different colors eventually leads to black. In light, adding colors lead to white.

So for changing light color here are some starters.

Red + Blue = Magenta
Red + Green = Yellow
Blue + Green = Cyan (which is kinda a light blue.)
Red + Blue + Green = White.

Question

so how would we get the blue in the picture? the guy who did it in VW GTI picture used one of those neon strip bar things he got from a radio store to distribute the blue light evenly, check out the thread:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/vwbb/Forum3/HTML/005682.html

my other question is changing the LCD lights like he did also would it be somewhat the same thing as in the Mod link like he did for our mileage/trip meter part?(link from initial post). because i want the same cholor scheme that he did.

this has gotta be the way to do it for our cars also. how is the green from ours on the back of the gauges, can we take it off pretty easily? anyone have pics of the backside of our gauges, to see if it will work basically the same and to see if wee have enough room to attach a neon light bar?

i want this mod it is so sweet looking.

thanx,

justin

If it is just a film-> Just go to a store that sells stage equipment, they have big sheets of colored film they put over stage lights. I've seen stores with about 40 different colors. I'd imagine a camera supply store may have it too...

just a thought.

Lightbulb

i think i read in a post a while ago that the film is thicker in different spots or something because of the bulb positions to spread the light to make it look even. so i think if we saw a pic of the backside of the gauges it would tell us alot. i think the neon bar would be the coolest looking blue though, also i would have to get blue cap covers for my Autometer gauges. man that would look so sweet.

any info./pics would be greatly appreciated be many of us.

thanx

I think that what it's going to take is someone who has the balls to take their gauge cluster apart and let us know what it looks like back there. I don't, I know that I'll mess up somethin'.

Question

Craig W,

Now see.......this confuses the p!ss out of me. I hear that there are two schools of thought insofar as primary colors. The way I was taught is that red, yellow and blue are the three primaries. Green is a secondary.

Some say that RYB are primary for pigment, and RGB are primary for light. I don't understand how they can be different, however.

You said that R+G=Y. Hmm... not really...
Red and green are exact complementary colors.
Exact opposites. If you mix them, you get a lack of definition... otherwise known as brown (or grayish). The complementaries:

Red/Green
Yellow/Purple
Blue/Orange

The six colors are set up on a "color wheel" to make it easier to explain, usually. Let's equate this to a compass:

Red - North
Blue - SouthEast
Yellow - SouthWest

Green - South
Orange - NorthWest
Purple - NorthEast

So... If you draw it out that way properly, then the color directly across from whatever color you choose is its complement. Its exact opposite. You can combine any color with any other color to achieve different color combinations, EXCEPT the exact opposite color. They can't be combined.

And the theory is that white = the combination of all color, and black = the absence of color.

All that in mind, I guess it just doesn't make sense to me--even if the Light spectrum IS different than the Pigment one--how, for example, you could combine green and red and get yellow.

Anyone?

my 1rst question is really, does anyone know for ceartain if the MY00 white faced gauges have a green film on the back of the gauges or is it just the bulb color?

2nd, if it is just a green film of some sorts, is it one peice or paint, and can it be removed without damaging the rest of gauge?

3rd, if it is a bulb, and if the bulbs are hard/impossible to find in different colors,
can we use the method used on the VW GTI mod?
the one on the link about how he disconnected the bulbs and replaced them with a Blue Neon light Tube and rigged it from the bulb wires so the light is distributed evenly?

4th, can a Neon Tube fit behind our instrument panel, is there enough room?

5th, is our LCD strip for the mileage/trip put together the same way as described in the link to the VW GTI mod?

thanx,

justin

Answer....the whole gage plate is one big green piece of translucent rubber....the white that you see is merely painted onto the green.....no film to remove....

My idea is to find someone who can replicate this by just making me new gauges... on the other hand if you want to do it yourself... I suggest getting a blue film and putting it over the green rubber, and changing the bulb from white to light or medium blue.... It should look much darker than aqua...but not quite as vibrant as the VW blue...

That idea should to the trick

Bankheist is correct. The gauge cluster is a transluscent green material. Someone installed blue bulbs in the cluster and got a teal light out of it. I don't know about sanding the green off, I didn't actually have my cluster out. However... if you contact Guilio.. he may be able to give you some more answers. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure who from the i-Club was trying to do this modification, but I remember not too long ago several members tried taking apart their dashes and chickened out without actually doing anything (for those of you who "chickened out," I got nothing but love for ya').

Most of the said they were afraid of tampering with their Imprezas, and I don't blame them. If I'm not sure what I'm doing, I don't mess with it...at least not on my beloved RS.

That said, I hope somebody figures out how to successfully complete this modification.

In a perfect world, all dealers would offer custom-colored interior dash lights as a factory option.

hey guys,
ok..........first off , I know Giulio, been is his car in the day, night his gauges are not lit blue. Secondly, he doesn't have white gauges, his are black (MMY98)
thirdly, I've taken apart my gauge cluster already. It seems the green color is not from the blulbs (they are vlear) but instead, the green is a permanent backing on the back of the gauges. In other words, it looks to me, the only way would be to sand down the green off of the back, which might look weird if you sand too much off, cause some scratches, whatever.
I even tried to actually remove the gauge face off of the rest, but it seems you have to remove the needles first, which I wasn't able to do for some reason. I even screwed up my tach needle a little so that it does go up and down smoothly anymore.
Anyone else with some ideas? Someone should look into at least getting bulbs and painting them, see what we can get from that. That seems the most realistic way of getting at least some different colors.

ok ladies and gents, i took apart my cluster today and i got all the way down to the white face clusters. i didn't take off the needles b/c i wasnt sure if there was a certain way they went back on. but i just folded the white plates back and didn't see any green rubber anyone was talking about! i have a MY00, is the green rubber stuff from earlier models, cause i sure as hell didn't have it in my car. but i looked at the bulbs as well, and they look like clear bulbs to me so i don't know how the color is green. i'm gonna take them apart again later today. ?Can anyone tell me if the needles need to go back on a certain way? please post and tell me and i'll get back with more info on how i'm tryin to change the color!! later.
