Default used wrx... CEL... bad evap system drain valve... $240

well i purchased my 02 wrx 2 weeks ago from a subaru dealer out of state. I got a CEL within 72 hrs, read the code, and found it was the gas-cap code. I tightened the cap, reset the code, went on my way. 4 days later I get the code again, replace the gas cap with a new one (OEM), and go on my way. 3 days later the light is on again. As I become more familiar with the car, I notice that it occasionaly idles rough and will hesitate when decellerating/maintaining constant speed on occasion.

I call the dealer I buy it from, and they say they will pay to have it serviced (even though it's not under warranty, it doesn't pass inspection like this).

I took it to a local Subaru dealer today and apparently the evap system drain valve in the right rear corner of the car is bad (doesn't close) - and the 3 hoses to it are disconnected.
They quoted me $243 for the parts and labor... does this seem right? I have to pay the fees and then get the other dealer to reimburse me, what a pain in the butt.

It also seems EXTREMELY suspicious to me that all three of the hoses would be disconnected. anyone have more experience with this area of the car?

In Massachusetts if you purchase a used car and it doesn't pass inspection, the seller is liable. You may want to make a few calls to see if your state offers any recourse.

Thanks for the info, I will definitely look into that.
Right now the dealer in NY (where I bought it) has said they will reimburse me for the repair. They passed it through a NY inspection when they sold it to me, but then by the time I got to PA the CEL was on, and of course it won't pass the OBDII scan for the emissions portion.

Does anyone know what the emissions testing on LI consist of? Is it a visual test or an OBDII scan? If it's an OBDII scan, there is no way the car could have passed... and it seems like they would have seen THREE disconnected hoses on a visual scan.

Like said above I would call the dealer you got it from. It should be able to pass emmisions and it has to be able to pass from what I understand. I know you bought it out of state so they couldnt inspect it for you...Seems to me they got the car on trade in, cleared the codes and sold it without fixin.

my thoughts exactly. i actually mentioned that i called the dealer and they claim they will pay for it in my original post, but i don't blame you for not reading it, it was fairly long.

does the price quoted seem right to you guys? All that just for a valve...

I have had a similar problem.. got a used wagon.. took it out for 3 test drives and everything was fine.. then the day after I got it.. the CEL came on... kept going back to the dealer, and they replaced the gas cap at first and made me sound like an idoit for not tighening the gas cap, even though I crank the thing to hell everytime.. then the cel still came back on.. eventually, it turned out to be a loose evap canister hose.. and since then it's been fine.. but the dealer covered all the costs...

hope that makes you feel better.. it makes me wonder if the dealers knew about this problem ahead of time, and just kept resetting the ecu so the code doesn't show up... how could they not have seen the cel for the whole time they had that car?

it's been 3 months now, and everything good so far.. except for the gas mileage (20mpg) horrible!!
