Question Help: Tail Light Removal

What all is needed to remove the rear tail lights. Is it necessary to remove the bumper first? Any input or instructions would be helpful.

Thanks.

Easy to do, just take your time with the hair-dryer... Excellent instructions on azscooby.com 's website.

Make sure that you use the 3M strip caulk to re-seal the lights or you WILL get water leaking...

Glad you guys enjoyed that. Looks like my timing was pretty good on getting that added to the site.

Today's feature presentation will be SS brake lines and brake bleeding section.

And I'm doing the SS brake and clutch lines in about a week! You've been talking to Peaty, haven't you? Anyway, the fruits of today's labor:

When I swapped my OEM rear clusters for red/clear rear clusters, I barely used any sealant other than what was provided by Subaru. I just made sure to scrape off as much black goo from the OEM clusters and apply it to the open holes in the rear of my RS (where the new clusters would replace them).

Once my new red/clear clusters were installed, but before I tightened the nuts around the threaded posts of the clusters, I added just a touch of black silicone that I'd purchased from O'Reily's. The silicone is supposed to be waterproof, although I've heard warning that it's very difficult to remove once it's set.

Oh yeah, the important fact to note is that although I relied primarily on the black goo to hold the rear clusters and waterproof my trunk (I'm serious, I used to little silicone it was a waste for me to buy the tube ), yet my trunk has stayed dry through several heavy rainstorms and multiple car washes.

The simplest answer is that you need time. once you undo the bolts on the original lights, you'll have to be patient and start to pull the lights out very slowly. Once you do that, then take the black stuff off the frame of the car. then, goto kragen or pep boys and get "3m windshield sealer strip". It's just like the OEM caulking (probably is) you just place that stuff around the imprinted line on the new clusters. once you do that you put in the lights, they will seem, "too out". But then you then have to tighten the bolts up. then the caulking will compress and your lights will be flush to the body. then hook up your lights and your done.

Don't be in a hurry either because it takes a little time to heat up the caulk. The black caulk will be really soft and will get on your car and the trim piece if you are not careful, use a good bug and tar remover and polish them when you are done. I also used a hammer and hit the OEM light's studs because there was no way I could push it out. I also used a flathead screwdriver on the places that were safe to get the lights started. Oh yeah I used 3M stip sealant. Yellow in color not black, but I would say any kind of waterproof sealant would work.
