Smile Evil horn modification

I was puttering around under the hood the other day and thought how sad it was that my Hella Supertones see so little use. So I tapped the hot lead on the alarm siren, wired in an inline diode, attached another diode after the hot lead for the horn control, and tapped in my lead from the siren just prior to the horn relay. I haven't set off the alarm yet to test it, but it works on the chirps. What do you guys think it will sound like when the alarm goes off?

Matt here in north Dallas has them, I want them! He stood me in front of the car and blasted me away.... I didn't know what was coming, didn't know he had them installed. I jumped like Jordan! They are loud! and wicked!

He tells me he wont get his money's worth until he can cause an accident with them (an accident not to his own car of course

-Kevin I want em!

Question

Hey, are those Supertones easy to put in for a knucklehead like me? I saw them on sale at Susquehanna's website and am seriously thinking about it. Dying duck indeed...

Exclamation

WARNING: This is a long post. This may want to go into the mods section since it's relatively complete. Can you tell I don't want to get into work mode today?

I own a MY99 RS. The horns I installed are the Hella Supertones [Thanks Trey]. I wanted to mount them behind my grille like I have seen since the red of the horns look great peeking out behind the grille. Mmmmm, red on black. Just like licorice. Mmmmmm licorice.

Just installed them the other day. Awesome. Mounted perfect right behind the grille. Easy install. About 20 minutes if you make the wiring harness before hand. Cost me about $12 in other parts to get it completely installed looking like factory. I DID NOT wind up using the switch supplied with the horns since I didn't see a need. I could wire up to the stock power without a problem. I could have also continued to use the stock horn, but with these babies, fuggettaboutit.

I used:

1) Small spool of red 16 gauge wire from Radio Shack. $1.99

2) Small spool of blue 16 gauge wire from Radio Shack. $1.99

3) 5 x Package of blue and red female connectors for 16-18 gauge wire from Radio Shack. $1.25

4) 5 x Package of yellow female connectors for 14-16 gauge wire from Radio Shack. $1.25

[Sheesh this sounds like a MasterCard commercial]

5) Crimper from Radio Shack. $4.99

6) 2 x 1 1/4" length round head bolts from local HomeDepot. $.05 each.

7) 2 x 3/4" aluminum spacers from local HomeDepot. $.40 each.

8) 2 x smooth washers from local HomeDepot. $.04 each.

9) 4 x star lock washers from local HomeDepot. $.04 each.

10) 2 x nuts from local HomeDepot. $.06 each.

11) 4 x zip ties. Free from work. <IMG SRC="http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif" border=0>

Wiring harness composed of 4 lines. 1 red, 1 blue 2 feet long, 1 red 1 blue 3 feet long. I did a loose braid to keep them together. I wound up only putting the red\blue female ends on that would connect to the horns since I was going to run the lines and didn't want to have the connector to the power in the way. I also wanted to trim them after I ran them to use the least amount of wire.

So with harness made, remove the grille. [If you don't know how, put down the tools and step away from the vehicle with your hand where I can see them.] Pop the leftmost hood release cable holder back through the metal. This should give you 2 symmetrical holes right in front of the radiator. BEFORE you wire the horns, mount them.

WARNING: You are working very close to the radiator. DO NOT SCREW UP THE RADIATOR!!

Install order:

Put 1 smooth washer on the bolt and slide the bolt through the hole. [This is to protect the metal of your car from getting dug into by the bolt]. Slide the aluminum spacer on then 1 star lock washer [to keep the horn from moving around the spacer]. Slide the horn on then another star lock washer [again to keep the horn from loosening during spirited driving and doing a pendulum effect thing]. Finally screw on the nut and tighten HAND tight for now.

You may [I didn't need to] need to bend the horn's bracket a bit to clear the radiator.

Broken down:

Bolt-washer-car-spacer-lock washer-horn-lock washer-nut.

Once they are adjusted correctly tighten them down solid. Not Superman solid, just solid. Replace the grille to make sure they fit BEFORE wiring them up.

Once they are set nicely, run the wiring harness along the hood release cable. Worked great. Used 1 zip tie here to loop around the hood release. No need to tighten down hard. Just enough to keep it snug. Hook up the horns. I wound up bending the male connector on the horns about 60 degrees away from the radiator to keep the wires away from the radiator.

So, your got the horns mounted and tight, the wiring harness connected to the horns and run down to where the stock horn is [right in front of the battery] and all set to get trimmed and finished.

Give yourself a spare 2" or so for mistakes when crimping. Use the yellow female connectors since you are going to be running both red wires to a single female and both blue wires to a single female. Trim and crimp.

Remove the stock horn connectors to the power and replace them with yours. Use the other zip tie to secure the harness.

TEST YOUR HORNS NOW so you can make adjustments in case they rattle on something or don't work.

WARNING: These horns are loud. Let me say that again, there horns are LOUD. Hear me? Good since you won't be able to hear anything if you stick your head in front of them to test them. They sound nice [great tone to them] but are directional and loud. I think the best way I have heard them described is:

Q: Will they shatter the rear window of the car in front of you?
A: No but they will strip the paint off the trunk.

Sums it up nicely.

Button up your baby and go drive to double check they don't rattle. Fin.

Thanks for the great info. I was just looking at the SuperTones. Even my wife hates the wimpy stock horns! So you didn't use the supplied relay? Since those are on sale for $55 until 11/15 I think I'll make the jump!

Just wondering, if you put them in the grille won't they get all wet and soggy when it rains. Are they water proof?

This may be too wacked out to be worth pursuing... If so I'm sorry for asking, but->

Can you mix horns?

Explanation:
Since I first test drove the RS it was obvious the horn was worse than the horn on my Big Wheel as a kid. As I drove home I was thinking of what to do to fix it. I knew that a replacement would be easy enough, but what to do with the old horn? I pondered this for a while and decided it'd be worth trying(can't tell if it's cool 'til after it is done) trying to let the new and old horns work together.

In use I imagine having the new/bigger horn be the primary horn-> Tap the button and get a little blurp from the horn. But if you hold the button down for about a full second, perhaps two seconds the OEM/smaller horn would kick in emmiting a stacatto 'beat' on top of the primary horn.

If your trying to imagine the sound think of it as GranTourismo when you rev the car at the beginning of a race and bounce the tach off the limiter-> A lower rumble followed by a higher da da da da, for the result of "Bluhh DAhhDAhhDAhh"

On the road the Primary horn would get the attention of the ignorant fool trying to merge into your passenger door. If that jerk then cuts you off and provides a view of his finger then lay on the horn and show him that you have too much free time to be concerned with his offence...

My problem is that I have no idea of how this could be accomplished or if it could work at all...

any thoughts?

thanks
-Silas

Unhappy

Doesn't work. I was playing with the tap and all of a sudden - AAIEEEE that's loud - I discovered that I didn't have a good connection previously. The siren is controlled by the ground. Back to the drawing board...

Have a Nice Day?

I have 'em in both our cars (RS & OBS) my wife's alarm is wired into the horns, and EVERY time, even if I'm expecting it - I practically stroke out when those horns blast. We both have the grill mount, and you should see heads whip around when I lay on those bad boys. I ALMOST want people to cut me off - its ALMOST worth it to give them a seizure with the "sonic nerve whip"

Question

So here is a question....

Would it make sense to use the supertones (which make a high pitched, very narrow, directed sound) along with the Air horns? (Which make a low undirected sound)???

THanks,

Nate

Heh. Hahaha, buhhahahahahahahahahahahah. Do you realize that 18-wheelers would have trouble navigating the blast radius of that setup? Make sure you never drive in Florida or you'll kill half the population by causing them heart attacks if you set them off in the state.

So, the Hella site says that the compressor that runs the air horns is 240 watts. Would this mean that you'll have to run your own wire from the battery to power it? I can't imagine the stock horn wiring would handle that...

For a alike sound, hrmmm. Ok try this. Take the stock horn sound and increase the volume 3x but just in front of the car. Then take the sound of the horn as it's coming towards you at a high rate of speed. Then take the sound of the horn going away from you at a high rate of speed. Put them together and there you have it. Nice tones, but quite *ahem* robust in volume.

So where did you guys buy your Super Tones? Traffic is getting much worse here and I'm getting tired of being cut off. I want something that will really get their attention.

My brother works for a small trucking repair shop in Oklahoma and one of the guys has a Kenworth with modified Train horns mounted behind his wind defelector on top of the main cabin. I can only assume that it would be loud and deafening.

240 watts?? That's like 18 amps at car voltages. I'd consider going to 10 gauge primary cable.
