Post Installed my rear spats yesterday. Easy

I installed my rear spats yesterday. And you do not have to remove the bumper cover!

First I printed out the installation instructions from the Mod section and after reading several times over the last month I was not looking forward to tearing apart the back bumper.

After getting down there and looking at it I desided to try to see how far I could go without taking the bumper off.

I trimmed a little off the back edge of the spat so it fit the curve of our old style bumper. Then I deburred the edge of the spat rubbing a towel over the edge. Good, nice and smooth now. Don't want scratches on the bumper.

I slid on the clipnuts in the wheel well. One one each side.

I installed the nutplates into the spats with the screws in backwards so they protruded toward the bumper and positioned the spat in the grove. Have the screws protrude the foward nutplate 1/16 inch and the rear 1/4 to 3/8 inch.

Then while laying with my head under the car position the spat in the groove and sqeeze the spat to the bumper. This left a screw impression onto the bumper.

Then I drilled 1/8 pilot holes thru the impressions.

I reposition the spat several times to insure the pilot was centered at the screw locations. (this would be the time to adjust the hole location while the hole is small, Ilucked out and was right on center) With the spat in the groove.

Then drilled the 4 holes full size.

I removed the nut plates from the spats and attachd the front one thru the hole in the bumper I just drilled. I had to take the one lower foward plastic rivit out to fish the screw up into the hole. I snuged it down with locktite.

I installed the aft nutplate into the spat and now slid the spat onto the fwd. nutplate that was attached to the car. Now I put back in the plastic rivet.

I fished the second screw (got rid of the one that came with the kit and replaced it with a hex bolt same legnth) thru the bumper and snuged it down with the 1/4 inch spacer that was in the kit between the bumper and the spat. (don't know if this is were that spacer is ment to go, but if you try to install this back nutplate without it it deforms the spat and it twists the rear corner of the spat out and the tie clip will not pull down the back of the spat flush.)

I installed the screw into the wheel well nutclip.

Now I positioned and drilled the back holes for the tie clips. Finally I secured them with the tie clips.

That was an easy installation! Spats are flush with the bumper and perfectly in the groove.

Glad I didn't remove the bumper. Total install was about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Dave

An hour and 15 minutes for me. I have 20 years of experience with this type of fitting work from the automotive and aircraft industry, so it will probably take longer.

I don't have picture but you should still have a copy of the Install from the mod section with all of the pictures.

Note: main thing is to take your time and make sure the spat is positoned correctly.

I also did not fancy removing the rear bumper cap to do this mod. And you don't really have to. It is probably easier (especially if you have big hands) to do it with the cap removed, but saves big time and hassle if you leave it on and just drop it down a little.

I just went and finally did it...

was alot of work but went pretty smoothly..

did anyone else notice that the back end of the left and right spats are different shapes, what's with that..

anyways..
a few extra holes and creative use of zip ties.. and it looks really good..

I did the full remove the bumper thing.. it's intresting.

Nah, I think I'd have rather removed the whole thing....

better safe than sorry with a goofed up bumper..

knowing my luck, I'd try and take a shortcut and all would go to crap.

There were no delays with not removing the bumper. Don't have to fit your hands inside anyway. Just use one of those claw dohickys for retreving dropped bolts to fish the screws/bolts thru form the inside. First side took about 50 min. just because I was nervous drilling thru a new flawless bumper on a car with 600 miles on it. The second side took about 15 min. plus about 10 min. to readjust the zip ties and clean up.

I replaced the two aft screws with hex bolts because you can't get a screwdriver inside with the bumper on. To each his own.
