Question

Did you structure the pieces at all with sandpaper or anything like that beforehand?

(long)

I did remove the painted pieces from the dash, didn't have to take the dash off. And it wasn't too difficult. It took me about 2 hours to remove the dash to figure out that I didn't need to remove the dash.. doahh.
Doing it properly (without taking apart the dash) should only take 10 mins or less. I was able to put everything back in reveres order in 5 mins. Most everything pops out, the other parts screw out.

Here how I took then off...

Center console (incl shifter area):
open the arm rest , pop off the screw caps, take out 2 screws.
{every thing else below pretty much snaps out & back in}
lift out the e brake bezel (start from back to front)
lift out the shifter bezel & unscrew shifter knob (for painting I also removed the shifter bag)
pull the radio bezel strait out.

Center Vent:
The vent and 'sunglass' holder is 1 piece.
open the 'sunglass' holder and remove 2 small tabs cover the screws located on the inside front area
remove screws.
open lid half way and tug the whole thing strait out. (you might have to do a tug & wiggle motions to get it out. Kinda tuff, but it does come out)

Main Side vents:
(use a small spatula or wide flat head screw driver)
It's held in by a curved metal tab at the bottom lip of the vent.
insert screw driver up & under the bottom of vent, els around a little for the tab)
Compress the tab up and pry the bottom of the vent out.
remove vent bezel from directional vent slats, how.... too odd to explain, look at it and you see how it comes apart. ( the bezel clips onto the slats)

Small top dash vents:
there is a metal tap holding it in place that is facing you.
Take your screw driver and insert thought the new opening were the main vent was and pressing the tab with a screw driver.
While pressing the tab, take another small screw driver and pry out or push out the vent.
(this is way easier that it sounds)

Door Handle/Tweeter Bezel:
loosen screw in the handle.
use screw driver to get under the bezel & pop it out.

Window button/Door lock bezel:
use screw driver to get under the bezel & pop it out.
Separate the buttons from bezel (they're snapped together)

Instrument Panel:
shroud bezel..
unscrew & remove 2 screws at the top of the shroud
Hold both sides of the bottom area of the shroud (area just behind blinker and washer levers) and firmly tug out to bottom. Spring like tab are holding them in. (no need to press in the tabs when you pull)

Instrument Gauge..
take out all the screws (3 I think) and remove whatever part of the instrument gauge you want to paint.
This is a good time to swap out that high speed STi speedo gauge if you have it.

Done.

hey everyone...

well, i did basic prep of the parts... complete removal... except for the top dash, didn't want to mess with the airbags.

subie gal saw my interior before back then... she was one of the only who supported me when others flamed my decisions with my car... she rocks!

rick... yes i did repaint my whole car... dupont blue ice with blue pearl and silver mini flakes... and you know i really like it when the import models are all over my car! =) for some reason they love baby blue!!! =)

impresive: Maybe when you buy a car!

So, will someone explain to me what the basic prep was? Just cleaning the parts off? Scuffing them up? What?

Hey... I just finished painting everything silver .

I didn't prep anything... just sprayed on the primer, then the silver paint, and then some clearcoat on top of that. It looks really nice but I screwed up a few times while taking care of the vents and the putting the door handle bezel back in... so... watch out while you're putting everything back in.

If you want to be very anal and to do the BEST quality job possible take the following step in prepping & painting...

Sand the surface to be painted
-use fine grit sandpaper. You don't want small gouges in the surface, they'll be magnified when painting)

Clean the surface of any particles, grease & oils.
-use latex gloves to avoid oil from you finger getting on the surface & dry with a painting type tack cloth.

Spray on several coats of primer with flex additive mixed into the primer

Lightly sand primer smooth with an even finer grit sand paper.

Clean surface again
-use latex gloves to avoid oil from you finger getting on the surface & dry with a painting type tack cloth.

Paint a few very light coats and then paint away with a little flex additive Mix into the paint.

Let dry and cure

Spray on clear coat or other clear protective type finish (UV protection recommended)
