Talking painted and installed my rear spat DIY!!

I painted my rear spat with Dupli 326 quick silver from Shueck. the procedure is sand it, put primer on it, few coat of silver, then few coat of clear coat. the result just like the body shop job! it's almost exactly the same as the Silverthorn metallic, if I did tell anybody nobody can tell I did it!
and the installation was kinda easy then I expected, take out two bolt each side, and follow the procedure that has been posted a few time, finished with in 50 minute!

Question

Has anyone tried doing this for the Rally Blue Pearl? If so, I'd consider getting the spats & front lip and painting 'em myself (along with the side skirts). However, would it simply be better having a body shop do it for me?

Kev,
I'm up in Bellevue / Redmond area about once a week. Meeting up would cool. I have some friends in Redmond that what go do some 'driving' sometime soon, we could probably meet up then.

JK,
It's easier to just get a shop to do it but can be very expensive $200 - $300 (side skirts only). If you have about a $100 and 1/2 a day to spare you can get all the supplies and do a professional quality job yourself. Some one posted some detailed instructions and parts list on the board of how to do this check it out.

Thanks for the link, Reiflex. Very helpful. And if Mr. Poncho is reading this: damn NICE job on your DYI painting!

But, after reading through all the steps involved, I think I'm just gonna get it done by a body shop. I don't think I'm up for spending all the time on painting my parts.

So, the next question is: since some folks have had problems finding a good body shop to paint the parts, should I simply go to a Subaru dealer and have *them* paint it? Or are they going to probably charge me more?

frankly I would get a very 5 bumper replica and rear spants from primitive racing. It'll match the body style but thats only because I'm a fanatic. maybe someone can find real ver 2 bumper rear spats from austrailia. I would be amazed!

If you guys go to like napa auto parts where they sell automotive paints they can actually
mix the paint to match the color of your car I bought 1 pint which is enough for 2 rattle cans of paint and it only cost 20.00 bucks.....

I guess rally blue pearl would be pretty hard. since it's a pretty unique blue, so I bellive it's gotta be hard to find a spray paint that match the color. I used spray paint for Chevy, but it matcheds pretty good

actually if you prepare it corecetly, no matter how you abuse it, it won't crack or chip at all. cause you have to sand it first, put primer on it, then you are set

As far as painting yourself...without a flex-additive to the paint, it will eventually chip when the part is subject to any bending/twisting/kicking force. That's why the body shop method is better. Of course, for the price I suppose you could re-do the paint a number of times before it equalled the cost of once at the body shop.

As far as body shops...some won't touch it (basically comes down to the personal preference of the body shop owner). I had no trouble finding one, or more than one. After all, these types of plastics are what most car front and rear bumpers are made out of...and those are painted, so...?

Price? I paid $300 to have my side skirts, rear skirts, foglight covers, and bumper vents (those orange things) painted. $100 for rear skirts alone sounds reasonable, since they have to mix all the materials anyway...$300 is rediculous.
