Default Why do we use detonation and not pre-ignition?

I dont know... maybe this is in the wrong forum. But, it feels like I am in the right one. Anyways, I just have a hard time understanding why we call "knock" detonation rather than pre-ignition. It seems like detonation is just a tag that someone stuck on as a way to make the term seem less umm, technical. I just don't see how detonation is the right word for the name of this occurence. Detonation(burn rather) happens in the cylinders constantly. It just seems really misleading to use the word detonation. I mean it sounds like a bad and awful thing and all... but do you get what I am saying?? Using pre-ign as the term tells much more about what actually happens during a "knock" event. Because that IS what is happening. You are having ignition begin before if was intended to begin inside the combustion chamber causing the internals to be kicked around in there causing the pinging or knocking sound.

Also, what the deal with knock count... why not knock volume or knock intensity??

Maybe I am just splitting hairs but I was just wondering. Anyone have any insight into why these two things are the way they are??

Thanks,
Richard

Drr, I am thinking of the wrong thing, haha. See and I almost edited my post to say something to the effect of uncontrolled combustion rather than a nice controlled burn and asking if that was the reason... ahh well. Thanks either way!!

PS. "Specialists" ask stupid questions too. They just feel more stupid when they do, LOL.
