Help: Popping noise from the engine bay

I have a hybrid ej22t on 2.5RS SOHC heads with Hydra engine mgmt.

My question is if anyone has ever encountered a popping sound from the engine bay. I am not sure what it is, but the sound is distinct. It happens sometimes on low load when shifting easy from 1st to 2nd and also at WOT (which is even louder and more pronounced and quite violent). The car seems to lose power and studders when it happens until I let off. I know it's not my timing, because I am running fairly conservative on the timing numbers. It almost seems mechanical. I thought it was the BOV, but I have tested that and that is not it.

That sounds like detonation to me, but I'm not an expert. Hopefully someon else can chime in.

Well I had a few ppl, including a certified mechaninc who works on modified cars all the time in my car and they said it wasn't det. I was running 94 at the time and AFRs on the FJO wideband were about 11-11.5

blow a hose loose in the IC? that makes one heckuva pop but doesn't really seem like an intermittant problem.

I thought it was hose, but that isn't it haha. Thanks tho. I kind of found that the problem doenst happen on a fresh set of plugs for a few hundred clicks, but that may not be the issue. as the plugs are somewhat rich looking brown to black

I used to have the same problem with SAFC and WRx injectors!!
