Post Where can I get cams installed?

I wanted to take it to Subaru of Santa Cruz but I gave them a call and found out that they cannot do it. The product is not CARB legal and they being a smog check station in CA, they won't do it for risk of being fined etc etc. Which is of couse understandable. So I need to know of a good shop that could take my baby and install the new cams in her and know that everything will be just fine when she's returned. Any suggestions? Oh and if you have done it how much does it run. Even a close estimate would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yeah that's exactly what prompted me to call Subaru of Santa Cruz. He said that they do install after market parts, though they consist mainly of suspension related mods. Ah well. I doubt they'll consider heads if they won't do cams.

I had the Cobb cam installed at a shop in San Ramon. It is about a 8 hour job and costed me like $600 'cause their rate is like 70+ an hour. I think they did a really good job and they do all kinds of performance mod. You may be able to find one that charges less.

BTW, which cam you are getting? I have the spicy cam and the CE light came on after the cam installed. I'm going to find out what the code is. There is another guy having the CE light problem with the street cam. There is a thread talks about that:

Imprezer, I understand your "Cobb Cam Install Price" may change after the first install , but Im curios will you do the 2500-5000 mile adjust valve lash adjustment too.?? $$$? How about a whole project car Install Coilovers/Cams/Heads/etc ? $1000? Or maybe thats pushin it I would bargain to avoid a trip to ISR when its time to do it.

Yeah the cam makes a big difference. The car is like a different animal over 4000rpm. I have UD pulley and CAI with K&N filter only, and the car pulls to redline so effortlessly.

P.S. I am still waiting for the MRT exhaust.

Yeah, that's about right.

Post

Yeah, trust slamck on this one ... his car is a freaking ANIMAL with that cam!!!

Remember what Mike Shields said back in 1997: you're not going to see real performance gains until you change the cams. Back then, nobody made cams for non-2.0 liter Subaru engines. Thankfully, that's no longer the case.

I had the Stromung catback on for about a month together with the CAI and UD pulley. The Stromung gave a nice gain at the top end but you still don't want to rev close to 6k as the torque dies down so quickly. With the Cobb cam, the engine totally wakes up above 4500rpm. The engine pulls so strongly, it can rev pass redline with ease. I found myself redline the engine even in 3rd gear all the time, something I wouldn't do with the stock cam.

I'm guessing with the MRT header/exhaust, the setup should be close to 200hp. Daniel, I'll let you butt dyno it when it's done

Let us know when you go to the install, I'll come by since I live so close. Plus I want to see these things. I'm debating getting them, especially since I'm running 15.1's now. I'm curious if they would drop me in high 14's

Later,
Adam

Wink

Well this won't happen until or a little after the 15th of this month. I didn't know I would have the great opportunity to have imprezer or anyone so qualified install the cams...So I don't have them yet. I just wanted to collect all the necessary information before I bought them. But as soon as I get them and imprezer gives a date I'll resurect this post. And let you guys know. I suggested to imprezer that we should have a mini install-fest. I think that would be way cool. Plus we could all enjoy each others company along with a frosty beverage while imprezer toils away making my ride faster.. =]
