hope this helps w/some of your problems. josh from cobb posted this at wrxforum.com

There is a base map update we recommend for those that are running the Stage 1 mapping with the AccessPort on a 2004 WRX. The program that bulk uploads maps onto the 2004 AccessPorts has an older version of the Stage 1 base map on it. We were under the impression the program had been updated by a now former engineer however it has been determined that this update had not been made. We apologize for what is an oversight on our part. We recommend that you delete the version of the Stage 1 (91 and 93 Octane) that is on the AccessPort and go to the site and download the newest version of the Stage 1 Base Map (Version 1.17) and download it onto your AccessPort. Then update the base map on your WRX. The newer map has some revisions on it that may be beneficial to some 2004 WRX owners.

The AccessPort Map Download Page is here:
http://www.cobbtuning.com/wrx/accessport/

Again this is only for those running the Stage 1 mapping on a 2004 WRX. STI's and XT's are not effected. No other cars are affected by this as the other maps have not had any revisions over the later ones on the AccessPort.

I just ordered an accessport for my 04 wrx and I was reading thought the the different map programs and noticed that some of the descriptions say that the stock intake is required. I have a cold air intake installed and was wondering if this will need to be removed inorder for the stage 1 91 or 93 octain maps to work correctly. I hope I can keep the cai since I did notice a performance improvement and I like the sound.

I found my answer on cobbs site. thanks

Well, this may be just me, but I reflashed my base map with this latest version and I lost power all over - live boost reading on the AP shows I've lost anywhere from 1 to 1.5 psi boost in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears (haven't tried 4th or 5th).

I've already deleted my old stg 1 maps, so I'm SOL

thanks J*Bishop

I found the "original" version of the 1.17 map (copied onto an hold laptop that had a serial port) and re-flashed the basemap. I had my wife sit with me and read off the AP live boost reading as I drove around. I'm hitting max ~13.4 to 13.7psi in 2nd or 3rd gear.

I did some driving last night and this morning (fairly cool weather, in the high 60s), and heard some possible pinging. I've never heard pinging before so I don't know if this is it - it's not the sound of "ping", it's actually a series of "pss" "pss" "pss" type popping sound.

This is when I feel the need for AFR, EGT, and a good boost gauge

I'm going to try and mix some 100oct. gas today and see if the pinging goes away. This 91oct crap we use in CA just plain sucks.

I had pinging in my old dodge dakota with the 5.2 magnum. It sounded like a bunch of rattling like a spray paint can when you shake it. I figured it was a bad tank of gas because I filled with 89 when the truck was stock and it always ran fin on 87 before. So, I added some octain boost and that was that.
