Default 2002 RS vs. 99-01 RS

Hi, Im looking at buying a used Impreza soon and came across a 2002 Subaru Impreza RS. I was mostly interested in a 99-01 RS 4 door, or coupe if I didnt come across a 4 door in a few months.

I am wondering how the 2002 RS will compare to a 99-01 4 door RS in terms of performance/handling, economy, and interior finnish quality. Looking for real world comments mostly as I have the data sheets. Also will it feel like I am driving the base model 2002 vs. the top model for 99-01? I want a nice car

I have only been able to test a clean '01 RS coupe as there are never many RS's for sale around here so any comments would be helpfull. I tried searching for info but didnt see much. Thanks.

GC Chassis (old body) They are addicting. Once you drive one, there is no compare.

a lot of people say the interior in the 00-01 is inferior to the 02+. i personally like the way the gc body looks way more than the bugeyes. they are addicting! i think you'll find driving a gc rs is a lot more fun than the newer rs's. the newer ones just aren't as sporty; you feel like you're driving more of a base model car. yes, its the same motor, but you know. i guess the image that soa made for the newer rs's doesn't help, as they seem to be trying to target them more to families than enthusiasts. my advice: go with a gc. i KNOW its hard to find a sedan (it took me 6 months to find mine, i eventually found it on eBay of all places). just keep an eye out for one, because there are some, just not many. i got mine and i can't really see myself driving anything else.

OK I think I will only look at 99-01's then. I was fearing the 2002 RS would be a little less 'fun' and your comments seem to confirm it. Thanks

Ahzlon, I live in Vancouver Canada so that is a bit too far, but thanks

i have an 02 RS, and personally, I wish i got the gc RS. The body style is unique and the sti lips and rear strakes (dont know what its called) make the car look freakin hot. The 02 RS probably has better interior, but the gc is lighter and quicker. Plus, people won't get you mixed up with a wrx or sti.

really?? I didn't know gc8s gets mixed up with wrx and stis. Hmm...have people got your car mixed up with a mazda? hahahaha, someone thought my car was a protege. well either way, I think the older RSs look nicer then the bugeyed one. But then again, I prefer the bug eyed wrc over the gc8 wrc ^_^. <--(sorry for this...for some reason the smilies aren't working for me.)

The name "Impreza" may be extinct in a couple years.

Anyways, I looked for 3 months to find my GC RS. It was worth the wait, though.

Damn, took me 2 weeks to find mine (granted, i had to go 1,000 miles to get it). Ebay works. Get an older GC, preferably a 2000 or an 01 because they have a rear LSD.

(mine's a coupe by the way)

The newer ones not only have the (IMHO) ugly bug eyes, but they also weigh more and the suspension is setup more for the family, not the enthusiast.
(yeah, i'm gonna show off my 2.5, but i'm proud of it )

To be honest...I will recommend you to buy a old school RS, because its a very unique car...plus it's really hard to find in US now...I choose a 01' RS over the 02 WRX or 02 RS when I was doing the car shopping 3 years ago...why...cuz I love the body style and I remmeber 01 RS have the same supension & differential setup as 02's WRX...so that's why I picked it over the 02' +...I checked the 04' RS sport package...it just a WRX shell & interior minus a turbo & different supension or differential(not sure)...

You are still in a heavier car that has the same motor and similar suspension. It's highly unlikely that subaru will build an NA car that will beat the RS in all around performance anytime soon. The newer RS' certainly have a nicer interior though.

according to MSN's data...
01 and 04 weight different is about 170 lb...
it's about one person weight difference...
does that make that much of difference in performance...?
maybe some light weight parts replacement can further minimize the difference...?

People pay $400 for a carbon fiber hood to save 10lbs...
People gut the interior to save 30lbs

170lbs makes a difference at the limit.

With the money you save from buying a GC, invest in lightweight bumper supports from SOA and lose another 80lbs. either that or start saving for a turbo.

I had owned a 02 RS and now I have a 00 RS...I would say go with the 00-01 RS (with LSD)

I cant really judge the performance because my 02RS was a slushbox but I would imagine the GC RS is a better performer than the GD RS based solely on the weight difference.

I have to admit the interior is nicer on the GD and on the bugeye RS you can put BIG tires on them without rubbing

Oh...people had asked me if my car was a WRX (both RS) and a co-worker even asked if my GC was a Mitsubishi?

They say 100lbs is about a tenth in the quarter, of course it also helps in braking and handling. Don't forget what ever you can do to the 04 to lighten it, you can do to the 01 as well.

It's a custom Magnaflow muffler with midpipe and 3 Inch tip. Cost me half what just a stromung costs and sounds wonderful.

here's a clip of the exhaust.
