Default Computer Gurus help build my computer!

Well, Ive decided to finally upgrade my computer, right now i have a 1.4ghz Amc, with 512 ram, and a 64 mb video card. Ive been looking at newegg, and i think I have found some good deals. For the case, case
the ram
(2sticks of it for one gig) the video card (I like to run dual monitors, is that a decent card for it and for games such as lineage2, and counterstrike...etc). And now comes the hard part, I dont know which cpu and motherboard to buy. I was thinking about a 64bit cpu, because itd be nice to have the top of the line, and its not to expensive, but I guess there really isnt anything that works with them yet. I really dont know which cpu and motherboard to buy, so if you could lead me to a fast combo, that would be good for gaming, please do. (I ran across this one and it had good reviews, but uses a 64 cpu. please help me in my quest! thanks for your time!

That case is pretty expensive, and you don't get a brand name power supply. If you want to spend that much money on a case, get an Antec lanboy. At least you know you don't have a cheap PSU that will fry your new ****. If you absolutely want to run dual monitors, then thats probably an okay card. You can probably find it cheaper at pricewatch.com. As for CPU, go with Athlon 64 3000. If you go any higher, you're gonna pay a premium. Mobos aren't really that big of a deal. The quality of ASUS, Abit nowadays is pretty close. Unless you are an overclocking nut, you can probably look at anandtech.com and find the one that overclocked .00000 00000 00001% more than the other brand.

64 = not necessary right now, but it might help in future-proofing. I'd wait though. What's your budget. A gaming machine on a budget might look like this... newegg.com = da bomb!

Get a newer nForce2 Ultra mobo with dual channel support
AMD XP (Barton Core) 3200+ (OEM cooling will be fine)
2x512MB PC4000 RAM in dual channel
256MB ATI Radeon 9800Pro
M-Audio Sound
Any NIC
2 x 120GB ATA HD (don't use RAID)
400+Watt power supply

I hate computers with lights. I had some big ass lights in mine and since its in the same room as my bed I had trouble sleeping. New egg had a nice Coolermaster black aluminum case for like 30 bucks. You might check that out.

also, a good place to read up on reviews is http://motherboards.org/

If you're putting it together for gaming, there's not much that's more important than the video card. A 3Ghz P4 with a crappy video card will be outperformed by a 1.8 Ghz with a very good one. Go for the Radeon 9800Pro if you can. Don't bother with the 256meg version, the 128 meg seems to be just as fast based on tomshardware.com's reviews.

sooo is $650 your number then? Because there's a HUGE difference between $400 and $650 in this arena.

www.pricewatch.com

Saved me hundreds on the last comp I built. Only problem is you have to order from multiple places at once, and it's all OEM. Very worth it though...

Ok, first of all, get EVERYTHING from newegg.com. Their prices are in the top 90%, and their customer service and shipping cannot be beat. They have my confiddence.

Ok, Price all of this out (assuming you're resusing the monitor as well):
nForce2 Ultra mobo
AMD XP 3200+ (barton core) CPU
Two (2) Sticks of 512MB PC3700
128MB Radeon 9800pro (Saphire makes a good cheap one with software)
Fortissimo III sounds card, or Audigy Gamer soundcard
120GB SATA Maxtor HD
NIC
430W power supply

thanks! you would recommend the xp3200+ over the 64bit 3000+? is it because the 64bit doesnt work with current programs? or is the xp faster?

In a distant month (year), the 64-bit processor will be more adaptable... marginally. However, at this time, and for what you want to use it for, go for the 3200+ XP and get faster for less money. Don't worry. It wont be out of date any time soon. Not at all.

edit: btw, I too have a 1.4 AMD and will be upgrading to what I'm recommending in a month or so. Except I'll be getting WD Raptor or similar HDs.

Well, looks like we're in the same boat Volvo, but I'm upgrading from a Cyrix II 250mhz pc from Compaq (2285v). Here's what I'm planning to get. Mind you, this is for casual gaming and video editing once I get a capture card:

Case: Chenming 301 (aluminum w/window)
PSU: Thermaltake 420W
CPU: Athlon64 3000+
Mobo: Soltek SL-K8AN-RL
Video: Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600 256mb
Optical: NEC Dual Layer DVD-/+RW
HD: Samsung 160gb
RAM: Mushkin 512x2 DDR400

All of it should be +/- $800 total. The Chenming case I'm still thinking about cuz its kinda expensive at Newegg. I found it at Xoxide for much cheaper, but they supposedly are really shady. What do you guys think about the parts I've chosen?

I still dont completely understand the power supply issue, I thought 350watts would be more than enough? Am I wrong? What would be the consequences?

Its enough if you just have the basic stuff in there, but if you're running a 10000rpm hd, big-time video card, and basically stuffing the ps with devices, chances are your ps will go kaput. An unfortunate friend of mine bought a case from a mom&pop shop and installed everything he had to a power supply that blew out in 30 minutes. All his hardware was fried so he had to buy a new system. I'd go a minimum of 400w if you plan to do add-ins in the future.

I can't believe no one suggested the

Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition graphic card.

Get this card and build a computer around and make sure the cards potential is maximize
