Default Check ignition timing? I feel STUPID, need help!

Seriously, I feel like a complete moron right now...

but step 2 in installing the AEM ems is that I need to get a timing light on the car and confirm that the EMS is in sync with the engine's ignition timing.

I've only got an inductive timing light at home and I'm pretty sure that's not going to cut it when the coils are right on the plugs. I couldn't find anything in the subaru service manual; obviously this isn't something you need to think about much with the stock ECU. But I definitely need to know!

Can someone point my dumb ass in the right direction please?

The guy from AEM said he managed to get the inductive light to work on the low-level signal wire to the #1 plug... I'm going to try that tonight and see how it works.
