Default Whose Line Is It Anyway - Scripted?

I was watching it this weekend. My friends seem to think it is scripted and not actually improv like they suggest. I think it is improved. I just think they are really good at it.

Anyone who has watched this show....do you think this is actually improv or not?

The way they come up with songs that rhyme and actually make sense all off the top of their head is amazing to me.

It is improve....the show lasta for a few hours in real time filming and they try about 5 times or so in order to get rolling, and they only show the best ones. Everything is fresh off the top of the hat and thats whats funny...I like when they cant stop laughing.

It's most likely total improve but taped over a few hours. That way, if some stuff really bombs, they have a ton more footage to fill their 1/2 hour show.

It's the same thing those supposed psychics do on their shows. A 1 hour show takes 2.5 hours to tape as they edit out ALOT of stuff.

Also remember they have been doing this for years. Like all things, the more you practice the easier it becomes. Also notice that they usually choose the same people for the same games as some are better than others. IE Wayne Brady usually sings while Ryan Styles (stiles? sp?) does not.

I think Improv too. I have been to a few live inprov shows and they are pretty close. Considering these guys are/where at the top of the food chain I can really see it. Plus how can you script a guy busting a neon light and setting his hair on fire. OMG I laughed so hard on that one.

I had heard that it's not scripted, but that they do a full dry run and know all the topics before taping starts. They might not know exactly what they're going to say...but they do practice it before taping.

Correction.

They do a full dry run, and they know what games they are going to play beforehand. They do not know the topics.

How can they know the topics when they get them from the audience, and also from my favorite game "Scenes from a Hat"

Yep. I'm a Whose Line Nazi. I've seen every episode a million times. They have many games, it lasts for a few hours. They then split those couple hours up into 2 or 3 shows. If you watch the people behind Drew, you'll see the same ones on diff't episodes. Some have 2 apperances, some have 3.

Definately improv. Brilliant. Colin is the best. Funniest person on the planet.

who's line is it anyway, both the original version and the drew carey version are my favorite shows of all time.

i never laughed so hard in my life than I do at this show. Drew Carey is a dud though, horrible improv. ryan, colin, wayne brady, greg proops, chip, brad sherwood...all great impovists..even that other weird skinny dude who wears the suits is funny, forget his name though. The Robin Willians episode was laughtastical..

Everyone who is on the current who's line, well most of them are from the original, wich started in england in the early 90s I believe, they then did whos line in hollywood, in the late 90s, with the english host, then it came back in 2000 or so with drew carey.

Its great.

I agree. All of the regulars are hilarious but Colin has to be the best of them all IMO.

hi. i have been to 4 or 5 tapings of whose line... and it is one of the funniest shows i've ever seen in my life. it's about 50 times funnier in person because they film for like 3 hours straight and then cut up the segments into a few shows, taking the funniest stuff. actually, the funniest stuff can't be shown on ABC. if they ever make an uncensored DVD of stuff they couldn't show it will be the funniest thing evar.

i do know that they do practice a couple times a week before the show with similar themes (as mentioned in a previous post) to keep themselves practiced, but a lot of the themes are just given by the audience. one of my friends i went with suggested a theme and they went with it, so i know that wasn't scripted. when you see them live you will see how funny they are in real life. you can get free tickets to see the show on the ABC website if you are in the los angeles area.

but yeah, i'm sure it's like freestyling rap. it's made up as you go, but they've done it so many times that it pretty much comes naturally to them. plus they've all gone to improv school and had a lot of training in what they do.
