Default 2003 auto trans question

Did a search and didn't find anything.....
We just picked up a SE Legacy and have a couple questions...

When letting off the throttle and gently getting back on the car seems to shudder or hesitate for a second or so. I called up the dealer and he said it was the transmission dropping into neutral which is a normal behavior. It's not really a problem but something I immediately noticed on the first test drive. Is the dealer right about his assumption?

The engine also has a fair amount of what I would describe as valvetrain noise. We can't hear it from in the cabin. Is this normal as well?

Last question.. What is the oil filter of choice for the 2.5?

Awesome car otherwise. Thanks for the help.
Ben

All normal, don't worry.

As for oil filter, dunno. There was a thread a while back I think, if not check scoobymods.com and theres some info on changing your oil...they might suggest one there. I always use genuine subaru parts. Just make sure you purchase a few new gaskets for the plug to prevent leakage if you're doing it yourself...and I wouldn't suggest taking it to a cheapo oil change place, cuz they usually don't change the gasket.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm hoping that some synthetic oil might quiet down the valvetrain a bit. I'll probably try some Mobil 1 10w/30 with the OEM filter and see how it goes.
