Default OT: looking for work while currently employed?

how do u handle it when they call back while u are at work?

is taking too many time-offs from work to do interviews risky?

will the place u are applying for call your current place of work? i have to list current employment in the resume, and they don't know i am looking for a new job.

basically, i'm looking for a more stable, better paying job without risking losing what i have now in the meantime. maybe what i'm at now is the best there is at the moment, but i've got to try.

comments appreciated.

1.) Give your cell number, if you have to talk to them, go somewhere private, like out on the deck, or grab a meeting room.
2.) They usually don't call your current work if you make it clear that you're still working there
3.) They only call references you give them

To avoid too many time offs, schedule your interviews around lunchtime, or early in the morning (around 8 or so), or late in the afternoon.

you've raised some good points...

i tried the meeting room thing once. i was talking on the phone and my boss walked in on me... i don't think i have to comment further.

references is a problem. i've been working where i am for the last 10 years. i've done side jobs/contract work but it's been at least 3-4 years now, and the most recent place i contracted for was bought out by someone else and no longer exists....!

maybe i'm unlucky, but i haven't been able to get so many interviews that i can conveniently group them together. it's been a situation where "i have a time slot at xxxxhrs tomorrow... can u come in for an interview?"... i've lost one already because i couldn't do it. maybe my approach is wrong???

I'm about to start the same thing with my work, but only if they refuse the raise they promised me for July 4th..

I expect my current manager to give me an honest reference, he knows if I'm going then I'm gone, there's nothing he can do, and he'll want me to leave on good terms. I also plan to be honest with the people that I apply with in regards to my current employment. I'll tell them straight up that I am working for a company that has no financial stabillity. My current employer isn't meeting it's financial obligations towards me, and I simply need a stable/enjoyable career that can either offer me a good salary or has obvious growth potential to offer.

I should move to Vancouver, register for a small business loan, and start a company that configures automotive electronics like car-pc systems for GPS/Entertainment..

Online employment service is a good reference for what is happening out in the market for the moment. Depends on what your field of career, different online service tends to gear towards candidates from different level of their career.

I have good success from some of them before:
http://www.bcjobs.net/
http://globeandmail.workopolis.com/c...rce/index.html

If you are looking for a career advancement, you may want to use a placement agency. They can tailor your needs, ie: find the right level of compensation package, schedule your interview to after hours, etc. If you have not try them yet, you may want to consider. Again it all depends on the nature of your career.

Hope this help and good luck

i just saw this on the jobshark website:

http://www.cover-letter-magic.com/index1.php

is this credible, or is it a cash grab catching people like me who is having problems with resumes?

Hey Ben,

That whole webpage is a set up for stealing your $26CAD. They are playing your emotional strings - they are preying (and also praying) that your uncertainty and doubts and fears about your job search will make you cave in and pay for some magic bullteproof cure.

Thx.
Cheers,
YVR
