Anyone else go to the Car & Driver Test Drive?

I went this past weekend and we got to drive the cars (listed below). Took each car through the performance, handling, and traction course.

Subaru Legacy GT Limited
BMW 325i
Volvo S60 and S70

Then at the end there was a tent with all current Subaru line up on display. The highlight of course is a replica of the WRC WRX STI that Petter Solberg drives on display in the center of the tent. Which we couldn't test drive, but I did get my picture taken of me sitting in the driver's seat.

Yea I went, it was held at Hollywood Park there were 3 of us in the car not including the instructor. 1 dude drove crazy not listening to the instructor so the instructor pulled the parking brake on him that was cool. The Legacy is a nice car not enough power for me another 50hp please. Oh reflash, However, it was definitely superior to the volvo and bmw. I was interview extensively afterwards for some dealership promo I was told. Lastly everyone received a gift bag which was cool.

I went to the one in El Toro. We had 6 in our group so it worked out to 2 per car + instructor. One guy spun out in a 360 and was burning rubber. Wasn't in our group, but on the track next to us. The Volvo S60/S70 felt like I was driving a boat as it kept swaying from side to side. On the traction track, I skidded with the BMW and Volvo whereas the Legacy held its grip. AWD doing its job obviously.

I went to the one at Hollywood Park on August 8, 2004 at 8 AM. The Subaru Legacy GT was definitely the pick of the litter and once I was done filling out the exit survey, I could smell that Subaru was behind the event. The Scooby representatives there were great to talk to and they appreciated my feedback (maybe it was because I told them I was a WRX owner). They told me I could sit in the WRC replica car too. That was really cool (as was the gift bag also)! I had an AWESOME time talking to Clint Mears, son of 4-time (4-time!!!) Indy 500 winner, Rick Mears. He said he's planning on getting an STi.

I also had a nice time talking to John Paul, Jr. as well. He used to race in the SCCA Trans-Am series, Indy Racing League (last win was at Texas Motor Speedway in 1997 or 1998 with Kelley Racing I think), and also in the American Le Mans Series (Corvette C5R in 1999 I believe).

Jason Workman (ALMS LMP2 (formerly LMP675) driver) was our "group leader" for the session. The other guy I was with most of the time used to own a Corvette and he sure was able to drive the cars hard! His wife was also there but she only rode during the whole time, so he and I got a lot of seat time! John Paul, Jr. and the first guy who rode with us (instructor-wise) let us wring the cars out without even getting close to the handbrake!

We got the lady on the "traction" course and she had her hand near the handbrake when I was driving (probably because I look young) even though I was going mellow. I drove about 70-80% because I was only on 4 hours of sleep or so. Jason took us for a hotlap in the "boring" 325i with DSC still on and he still could hang that back end out a lot without knocking any cones!

When I left around 9:15 AM, there was a pretty stock (nothing wrong with that!) 2004 WRB WRX parked next to me and a black Evo a row behind.

What's funny is there is a another thread going on where a guy is trying to get rid of his RX8 and having to decide between the Volvo S40 and Legacy. He wants a bigger car so his family can fit (wife and two newborns). Looks like he should of went to the test drive, assuming there was one in his area.

The poll shows the Legacy in the lead obviously. It was 95% to 5% the last time I checked.
