Unhappy 89 Justy Carb

Hello!
i have a 1989 Justy GL that has not been run for quite a while. I have recently put a new battery rotor and cap on it. Now it will only run if you choke the carb by holding your hand over the top. When you let go it will die. Does anyone know if this is most probably a stuck float? If so, what is the best way to correct the problem? Also , I don't have a diagram of the carb and was wondering if I take the top off of the carb will I be able to put it back together without one?

All help appreciated.
Thank
jpt

Is this after it gets up to some temperature also? Even in the middle of the summer my old Subarus (including my Justy) needed some form of choking to get them started. Your cars has an Electric choke on it that is basically a big coiled spring. When that spring breaks it no longer chokes at all. Look for a 1.5-2" round thing on the side of the carb, with three ears with rivets on them. That's the electric choke. Carefully drill out the rivets and open it up to see if the end of the springs is broken off. You can put it back together using short sheet metal screws.

It sounds like you have a problem with the main jet duty solenoid you need to take the top off and clean out the bowl . You will need a new gasket to put it back together. You can also check the solenoid elctrically for resistance.
