Depends on what your looking for in your system (i.e. great imaging or loud hard hitting bass or just plain loud or superb clear sound w/good bass) and what you are willing to spend.

a nice alpine, clarion or pioneer headunit $400+
Boston Acoustic Rally's in front $350
Boston Acoustic RX's in Rear $200
A decent 100x2 $200
2 8" Subs in an enclosure that ports into the cabin somewhere, be it the rear deck lid or through the seat...$250+
Wiring $100
Misc = $200

This would be a +/-$1500 system, and would sound excellent, My set-up is relatively the same with a Pioneer deh-p900r head unit and Clif Design competition subs, Pioneer Amp, monster cable wiring, etc

My first car show i won 1st place for cleanest sounding stereo..not bad?!?

Now if you want bass...just get a crappy cd player and a 500x2 amp running 2 15's, then watch your wing rattle off as your going deaf

You have to tell us a little more than that...do you want the people in the neighborhood next to you to hear the bass, or just you and your passengers?

I have one 10" sub and it gives me all the bass I need. Of course this 10 can handle a sh#tload of power...I got it used and it used to be run at 400Watts RMS. I have a 400Watt x 1 channel amp [bridged] and only have it turned up about half way. That's all I need...and I don't need to worry about working the equipment too hard either.

So, tell us what you want/need. It might be cheaper than you think, if bass is all you want.

FREE? Man, this is America; ain't nothin' free! Why is it every one piss's and moans about install cost. If it was that quick and easy people wouldn't have to pay me to do it. They would do it theirself. Just be glad we don't charge mechanic labor rates.

Now to answer your questions.

Some markets offer free labor on decks. You would have to check with your local store.

Here is the pricing at my store:

Radio: labor=free, Pocket for under radio=$15 Wire Harness=$15

Fronts "co-ax": $50 labor ($25basic+25 for door panel removal)+ $5 speaker clips

Rears "co-ax": Same as fronts (except rear seat & deck lid instead of door panels).

Subs: $13ea (to mount in box)2=$26

Amps: Labor=$40ea

Amp wires= 1 2channel amp $70, 1-2channel and 1-4 channel $150.

So, I estimate around $396 for a 2 amp install. Plan on leaving the car all day.

If you want to save some money on the install, watch for "open box items". They come with free basic install, plus the unit price is discounted. So you would save $25 per set of speakers and $13 on each sub. Also don't you speaker clips, have them cut the plug off and put on spade connectors, save $10. Buy the double din Clarion radio save $15 because you won't need the pocket.

So that would knock install down to $215.

Hey, I am an installer at Best Buy for the moment. So here all the info you need on them.

The sales guys are not on comission. But most will push their service plans on you. They don't make any extra money on it but the company does.

Here is what I would recommend from there. I install the stuff so I know what we pull out for and send in for service. This list is based on the fact you want it loud and sound decent.

Decks: Carion w/ 4 volt output and sub control. ~$299

Front amp: Clarion 4 channel amp ~$299

Sub amp: Rockford Punch 500 ~$450

Front speakers: Cerwin-Vega 5 1/4" the 6 1/2" are to deep. ~$99

Rear speaker: Cerwin-Vega 6 1/2" ~$120

Subs: 2-12" 8ohm punch XLC or 4-10" 4ohm XLC

Question

Just a note to Bassman :

Dude, where'd you buy your Boston Rallys??
$350??? Jesus. I only paid $220, brand new!
That's kind of a shame, this is why I ask...

If you're just looking for thunder in your car, I'd say maybe eXtant or a less-expensive JL. Perhaps MTX or Kicker...

I have a decent setup. Have a Clairon DX6675 or DXR6675, with 6" JL 200W speaker all around and an Bazooka Powered 8" driver 100W. Pretty decent setup, enough for my daily driving to work. My wife loves it alot.
Got the Clairon for $150, 4xJL for $250, Bazooka for $200. Not bad for $600 or so.

There is no "BEST" when it comes to audio. its up to you. Just pick something in ur price range. If you like the name, GET it.

I went with pioneer head unit cause i liked the display.

Went with CD Technology sound stage fronts cause my friend (who installs at a pro shop) said they sound crystal clear

And went with 2 U.S. Amps cause.... Well they Kick ASS.

Now if i can get installed in my damn car. Waiting on fiberglassing sub encloser. 3 months and still waiting. that pethetic somebody shoot me.

Oh.. DUH... I forgot to mention my 2 10" Kove Armageddons. (which look really pretty in the box's)

No offense but personally I think Cerwin-Vega is crap.

Then again, I feel that when it comes to audio you do not want to skimp on anything. That is why I will be going with either Dynaudio 3-ways, Focal 3-ways, or Boston Pro 3-ways in the doors and probably 1 or two free-air 10's in the trunk (don't quite know what kind yet).Although I would love to use a Mac amp, I think I will probably go with Phoenix Gold or Extant.

I guess I don't care too much about bass though. I am more of a sound QUALITY kinda guy!

Oh well, just my 2 cents....

Yes, I agree that Cerwin's are not the best sound quality speakers out there. He was looking for lower priced stuff so I was just telling him what I felt was the better stuff that the store carried.

NEVER buy RETAIL!!!!!!!!! Talk about RIP OFF!! Here is what I say, go with 2 15" Avalons....Trust me...they are good. My friend bought a 15" Avalon for bout 80 bucks on EBAY and its great for the price. He loves to boom and highly supports it. If you don't want to go to Avalon, try JL Audio. Stay away from all retail stores. Buy only ebay.

SCOOBYSHAG,

Bless you my son for going with Dynaudio!
I've yet to experience them, I hear they're fantastic.

However... 3-ways aren't necessarily better.
Many believe 2-ways are, seeing the woofer as having no purpose (all bands of sound in the spectrum are covered by tweeter, midrange, and subwoofer according to this thought). Are they right? No, they're opinionated. Personally I think there's some that's missing from 2-ways that *might* be cured by 3-ways, but I'm not sure.

As for sound quality though, if that's what you want, don't go with a free-air subwoofer.
Sealed and sealed only.

NEVER buy retail?!?!?
whatever.

there is a lot of options available
if its CHEAP you are looking for(not VALUE)
go to best buy they start at the lowest of low end and stop at middle of the line product.
if you want to actually be acknowledged and helped by someone who isnt just waiting for their shift to end, go to a local shop mid-hifi the tend to know a LOT more about products in general.
try infinity.com they have an integrated sub/amp
take a look at it any way 4-500 bucks...

Having had the three way MB Quarts, Dynaudios, Focals, and Vifa setup in my last competition vehicle they are all awesome...and yes there is something missing in a two way setup. Its called mid bass.

I realize the 6 1/2 components should be able to cover the whole spectrum just fine but they really don't. I could get into a discussion on why...but who really cares.

As far as buying audio equipment you want to take a couple of factors into account when buying stuff.

Headunits: Most cd headunits out there today are pretty good(OK, lets exclude stuff we have never heard of...like panaudio). You want to make sure you get a unit with the features necesary to build a complete system. This includes appropriate RCA outputs as some do not have these. Also, the display is something many people don't pay attention to. I like the approach of less is more as you can usually read it easier while driving. Lastly, whats your budget?

Amps: Again, most of your name brand stuff out there today is pretty good and will satisfy 95% of the population. And you can get crossovers built into many of them eliminating the need for a seperate unit.

Speakers: LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN. Take some music along that you know and spend a while listening to them. You would be amazed what you can find at pawn shops for subs. But please listen to the speakers first to make sure they aren't buzzing or blown. I would not recommend buying full range from a pawn shop as subs can usually take more abuse than tweeters.

BTW, Silversuby, hows that stereo sounding?

A friend of mine--though I suppose he's more of an acquaintance--cheers for two-way systems. I met him on www.bimmer.org ... he owns a '99 (maybe a '98) BMW 328i. Nice car.
He's done a TON of stereo work on it, and all by himself. He had Dynaudio System 220s up front, I believe. His theory was what I mentioned: no point to the woofer.

However, even though I've never really heard a (good) three-way system, I can just tell that there's something extra that they'd provide. Midbass is what it is, indeed.
There are some drum beats, some symphony blasts, some low voices that would just beam if I had the full spectrum. Problem for me is justifying the $700+ I'd have to spend to get a new system, not to mention new kick panels, and Dynamat for my doors!

Yuck, no way, just spent a zillion bucks on the system I've got!
