Default quick question about oil pressure...worried about my car

Ok so my oil pressure is usually around 60-90psi (more like 80psi almost all the time).

So I went like 4k miles between oil changes... I dont know how I did this, its the first time this has happened. So ok, I wasnt low on oil...ever....maybe 1/2 a quart, this thing hasnt been eating oil (even at 148,000 miles).

I bought the same oil (mobil 10w30 synth blend), and the same filter (Nippon - purchased from Rspeed).

I added the right amount of oil (3.8qt). After idling for 5min or so, the oil is where it should be - its right around full.

I went for a drive after rotating my tires and changing my tire pressures to let everything settle down again, and I notice when I am idling at a stop, my oil psi is around 28-30psi... But when I start driving again it is back up to ~80psi. This is strange because it has never been that low before...only when I got the car, the PO had a fram pos filter on it, and the pressure was always real low, even when I was on the throttle.

What do you guys think? I mean I did everything the same as far as how tight my filter is, and my entire process of changing the oil hasnt changed in all the years that Ive been doing it. Its just weird that it does this with the fresh oil I put in..

UNLESS Nippon changed theif filters (its the same p/n though).

thanks for any help in this...

Erm... your oil pressure will drop at idle..... that's normal And btw... with synthetic oil you're silly not going 4-5k miles at least between changes on that car.

well its not pure synthetic...its a synthetic blend, and the oil was mad nasty when I dranined it...it smelt like something horrible.

I know the pressure will drop at idle, its just NEVER gone down to 30psi at idle. Usually at idle it would be up near 60 or 70psi.

Its never been this low trust me .

I've read numerous posts that say the oil pressure at operating temperature (which is around 180-200F IIRC, but probably wrong) is around 20-30psi. Sounds like you might've kicked some gunk loose? On my old El Camino we cleaned out a bunch of gunk from inside the valve covers and it ran less oil pressure at idle.

28-30psi idle oil pressure is perfect, even a little high, on teh miataarrrrrggh

Quote:
So for the 90-94, when cold the oil at idle, OP should read between 60 and 90, shooting up almost to or to 90 when run to 3K rpm when cold.

Hot, idling in traffic, could read as low as 10psi or so and your still OK.

Crusing at 3-4K rpm, look for pressure between 30-60psi.

Mine drops to a touch under 20psi when really heated up while at idle. Cold start: about 95-100psi. It can fluctuate quite a bit.
