Default My friend "stole" a 996, lucky bastard

99 (first MY)
13000 miles
double black
perfect mechanically and cosmetically
no body work etc
$31,600!

the 997 will/has really pushed 996 prices down and they were already low. I think the days of 911s holding value better than other luxury/primium cars are gone. If you have alwys dreamed of owning a 911 now is a good time to go for it. That being said I think my friend really did good on this purchase. He always finds good deals

Your friend didn't exactly steal that car. He saved 10K-15K by buying a car with 80K or more miles on it. 40K-45K buys a low mileage car, under 50K miles.

Also, 26K miles a year is a friggen lot. That car could very well be a basket case later in life.

Then you shouldn't own a porsche, if you can't afford to fix a 30k car, you can't afford to own a 30k car.

What in blazes?!

Find an 80s ferarri for 30k. There are plenty. Now pay 5k every few years or so for repairs/maintainence.

I'm not even going to try and rationalize this one any more than that example.

Ill try to post some picks, I havent even seen it yet he lives 1000 miles from me. Yeah the milage is 13k not 130k. The potential maintenance is a big concern but I told him the worst cas scenario is he drives it for a year or two has a blast and sells it for at least what he bought it for. There really shouldent be any huge repair bills 996 are relatively cheap to maintain compared to air cooled variety. A leaky rear main seal is the worst potential problem and the fix is 2k which is a lot of mony but reasonable considering if the cost of the car + repair is still less than what it could sell for.

Whatever, I'm saying, if you can't afford to buy an expensive car, don't buy it. If a car requires 5k in new parts every year, and you can't afford it, don't buy it.

You're fixing an $80K car, not a $30K car...

I wouldn't worry too much about the maint, they don't need alot. The oil changes are every 15K miles, the oil is synthetic (each oil change runs about $150 - $200 IIRC). 30K brings up plugs, belts, etc.

Point him in the direction of www.rennlist.com ... a wealth of info. and a bunch of good guys on that board.

How much maintenance are you going to see on a 5 year old car with 13k miles? Answer = none. The brakes are just broken in. Good deal...unless it was it purple with shag orange interior.
mmm double black...very tutonic.

There is a saying re Ferraris, "surprisingly many people can buy a Ferrari, while surprisingly few can afford to own one."
