Default peugeot engine shuts off and turns on by itself

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...t_040907171042

I wonder what wear and tear does to the engine? I remember honda always says that it's less wear and tear to turn the car off and on for 1 minute rather than letting it idle for that amount of time.

there are concerned with consumption/pollution rather than engine life.

Idling however is very hard on the belts and valvetrain.

That's why you should always keep your car tached at 6000 RPM at stoplights.

Ive heard...if you are going to be idling the car for more than 10 seconds, its cheaper to just turn the car off, then turning it on when you need to go. The cost of an alternator should you ever need to replace it will be cheaper than the gas you wasted letting the car sit. Also better for the environment. Let the flaming begin.

hmm, there is know proof behind this:

what about cooling down of the cats and other emissions stuff. startups dump a lot of un converted garbage. EFI is good ebcause it doesnt dump fuel to start so thats a plus. what other factors would coem into effect?

(im brianstorming ehre at 230 am after re-doing our race teams website and am tired)

When Porsche produced aircooled 911's, they had to leave them idling overnight during artic tests. It was part of their QA methods during those times. There were no problems with abnormal wear or tear that I recall. The only problem, well not really, was if an engine shutoff and froze overnight and you had no engine warmer. That would suck.

Again, Porsche idles engines all the time, even at -20 below.

That is REALLY annoying. I wish people would stop trying to implement this technology. Its the same for the Civic hybrid, there's a delay between the time you step on the gas and the car actually moving.

Great for evasive manuvers in an emergency

We call that a slushbox.

And regarding the peugot technology, it would make me nervous. Also, a lot of european city driving involves a lot of stop and go. Thats a lot of stop and start.
