To have a mechanic do it? Oh I'm sure it'll be past a grand at best... probably more. You'll definitely wanna be sure the heads aren't cracked as well... How much has the car overheated?

I closed the other thread since this one asks a more specific question (and didnt drift off topic by other people)

Generally on an 86, it will cost more to repair than the car is worth. The car for the most part wont gain TOO much value from it. If you intend to keep the car for a long time then go for the expense... I agree it will probably cost more than $1000

Its all labor though as mechanics pay something like $15 per head gasket. And since you are in that far in the engine, doing timing belts and all oil seals will be worthwhile.

If you are willing to try it yourself... you can get a new head gasket + a full 60K service for like $300 or less. If you have a shop do it, prepare to pay as much as $1500 probably if you have em do a tune up too.

If you are in the Portland area, I'll do it cheap. Probably under $500 parts AND labor
