Default What to do if someone registers a mispelling (kinda) of your domain

A good freind of mines URL (lets say its www.yahoo.com as an example)

has found that a cybersquatter has registered www.wwwyahoo.com (or the equivalent)

How would one deal with something like this? The registrar of the url is the owner of this name as well...

How messed up is that?

There is not much you can do, aside from offering to buy it from the squatter. Bigger companies, Yahoo as per your example, can often push smaller squatters out of the way with lawsuits- but the average joe can not typically afford that.

Hire an IP attorney. The courts don't tolerate squatters anymore.

Yep, there was someone who bought urls for all the kodak products and got screwed for it. If its important enough to him, threaten with a lawsuit and he'll probably back down since he knows he'll lose.

So you are saying that your friend owns, for example; www.abcdefg.com... and someone else has registered www.abDCefg.com??
If I am understanding this correctly, how about telling him to get over it.. One does not equal the other. If he wanted to own all spellings and misspellings of a name, he should have registered them to begin with.
If I am not understanding this correctly.. nevermind.

No

using your example

www.abcdefg.com

Squatter-

wwwabcdefg.com

(adding the www)

urls name (file extensions and folders are a different story dependent on what the server is) isnt case sensitive.

But still...
www.abcdefg.com != www.wwwabcdefg.com

I can understand that it may be a bit frustrating to have something that close... but he should have registered it if he wanted to keep someone from using it.

Complain to Internic though its probably too late to do anything at this point without legal action.

BTW Internic offers protection against just such an activity for IIRC $9/yr or something cheap like that.
Basically it delays registration of domains toward anythign that resembles that of anohter signed up for the service. The documented first owner is then afforded first rights of refusal and can deny the secondary from securing the bogus/squatted domain.

Not sure what you are getting at.
I was just trying to figure out the scenario. You friend registered a specific domain name.. and someone else registered a very similar domain name (the only difference being the added "www". Is this correct?

Steps to take to do what? Deny someone the use of a similar domain name?

Not trying to start any type of flaming.. just trying to understand the situation.

^--Squatter gets a similar domain name to either 1.) get traffic from people who mistype or 2.) get the owner of the "real" domain to buy them out.

If it is confusingly similar, you sue them, win, and be done with it. If you were there first and registered. Just like you can't register a celebrity name and then try to sell it to them later. You will get sued and pay their court costs.

I could not make a silver can with say, dark orange writing that says "Zoors" that is a beer and use "the grey bullet" slogan. Coors would not be happy....
