Default Changing springs... do i really need an impact wrench?

I'm changing my springs this weekend and I've read a few tutorials where there is mention of using an impact wrench. Is this recommended or just for convenience? I'd rather not have to buy any tools that I'll only use once or twice a year

Thanks.

I think there are two places where people say to use an impact wrench.

1) The bolts holding the rear strut to the wheel hub are a PITA to remove. I did mine without and had to use all sorts of levers, jacks, kicking at wrenches, etc to get them free, but it worked in the end.

2) The top bolts holding the strut into the top mounts. This is because the strut shaft can rotate and cause problems. I think it works fine if you loosen these bolts when the strut us still on the car.

So, you can certainly do them without.

More importantly, do you have spring compressors available? I've heard of people doing it without, but I used them.

It is defintetly a convinence, but not required. It can significantly cut install times. Especially helpful for stubborn bolts.

If you plan other DIY adventures I would definately recommend. Air tools can be pretty pricey, but you can get the electric impact cheap (less than $50) which I found helpful for removing lugs. Which if you have the wheels off alot (brake jobs) is very helpful.
I also used this to break loose the top nut on the struts.
