Default Black River Stages Club Rally Canceled

Copied from a seperate message

Due to a lack of entries for the 2004 running of the Black River Stages ClubRally, the organizers are cancelling this year's event. Those competitors who had registered for the event will have their checks returned to them, none have been deposited at this time.
While we are deeply saddened by this decision, going forward would expose the Central New York Region to a significant financial loss. We'd like to thank all of those who did enter as well as all of the volunteer workers and radio operators who had committed to helping put the event on.

Several people have shown their support for both BRS and the ClubRally series over the last few weeks, and we'd like to specifically thank Niall Donnelly and Greg Healey for helping us try to raise the number of entries. While the final entry list will forever show 16 teams, these two had gotten verbal committments from several more teams. Still, it wasn't going to be enough.

mark,
brs guy, ret.

I'm curious- how many entries do you need to make an event cost effective?

They needed somewhere in the mid 30s. Traditionally this has been an over subscribed event. It was very disapointing to have so few entries. While the final entry list will show 16 entries, they did have verbal conf. of a few more.

In retrospect, the trouble STPR had filling the field should have been a warning that rally's good times had reached an end. STPR has been the hottest rally in the U.S., with 90+ cars and a waiting list for many more, in each of the past five years. This year, they started 55 cars.

Rally is a 24-36 month trailing economic indicator. From '99 to '02 and even into '03, rally was powered (like many other discretionary hobbies and expenditures) by the "bubble"-boosted income of the late '90s. It takes a few years of high earnings before most people feel rich, and a few years of lower earnings before they realize they're not so rich. The willingness to spend money on something like rallying follows accordingly.

For the past few years, anyone in the Northeast with access to a few miles of dirt could put on a ClubRally and get enough entries to fill the field in the first week. Now, if you want to put on a rally, you better be a damn good salesman. You also better talk to the various rally "factions" up front and make sure they're on board.

Good times, then bad times. But just like the economy always bounces back, you can be sure good times will come again.

But for those of you in the southwest, the Paris Texas event will occur this Thanksgiving weekend. Our region will allow us to lose money on the event but we need only 10 cars to break even with the sponsorship we get.
