Hi guys! How many here are converts from WRX's? Are you guys satisfied?
Well, I got bit by the baja bug again am going to sell my WRX to get the Baja turbo.
I know it's the best of both worlds which is what I want.
Lastly if you don't mind, how much did you pay +/- invoice and out the door.

Thanks for your response!

I kind of fall into this catagory.
I had a WRX when my wife got an 03 non-turbo Baja 5 speed, then that was totalled, then she got a 04 turbo baja auto-slapstick. That was less than the 03 by about 500 bucks by the time we got done dealin. The 04 was on the lot a looonnnng time and they were happy to finally unload it. Our 04 came with everything(splash guards, rubber mats, carpet mats, leather trim, premium sound system with door tweeters, 6 disk, cargo net, bed extender), the 03 did not. Then I traded my WRX for a 04.5 VW Jetta GLI. We still have the 04 Baja-t.

pro/cons
The Baja is not a WRX. Not even close. The baja-t is a lot slower, a lot more rolly-polly(still better than all mini-trucks), the tires rollover, wicked under steer, less head room, more blind spots, less interior space for passengers, seats are flat, can't get the driving position quite perfect like in the WRX, worse mpg, worse aftermarket support (almost non-existant)....
But...

The Baja will lug your stuff like nobody's business. It will tow a lot more. A classy, more sofisticated interior. Ground clearance is important to us as we are in snow a lot and rough rocky trails that the wrx couldn't handle. That short little bed has proven its self time and time again. We're remodeling our 30 year old house and there is just so much more stuff that will fit. The baja is our family car, its relaxing to drive, the auto is just what I needed to make that slow transition from "hot-rodder punk" to " soccer Dad." Yet, I can still whoop it up in the Baja if I want. The Baja is stealthy here in New England. The cops(or ricer punks or domestic owner short pee-peed people looking to prove something) aren't out lookin for Bajas, they're lookin for WRXs.

So I quess my message here is the two aren't comparable. Yes, they both have AWD, and both say Subaru. One is a sporty car, the other is an Outback with a bed and a little more power. The WRX can be tossed around, The Baja can have stuff tossed in it.

edit; the Jetta GLI(1.8T) is slower than the WRX also, slightly faster than the Baja-t. The 04.5 GLI is beautiful, the baja and wrx are not. The FWD 6-speed will hinder me when the snow flys, so I'll be hoggin the Baja from my wife more often

Thanks for the lowdown Chris, good info! I kinda figured that the Baja will not be as fast and nimble as my WRX but both cars do have +/-'s.

I'm coming from a WRX, suspension, engine and electronics mods.

One thing about the WRX was, it was TOO much car. As in, I could head out to the hills, leave it at 4k RPMs in 4th, and never touch the brakes through the curves. So, short of pulling up to the 5-0 and just asking him to ticket me... it just wasn't that much of a challenge anymore. Not to mention the rough ride and worrying about my wheels all the time (low sidewalls + rough roads = nervous).

The Baja is, as a friend put it, a DEE-luxe machine. It's alot of car (and a little bit of truck). It feels much more refined and accomodating than the WRX.

I'd question getting one if you're still bugging for raw performance. Hook up with a WRX wagon (what I had) or a Forester XT if you're wanting to mod up etc. and take it autocrossing.

Like everybody else, I'm really curious about what the engine is or isn't. I'm not going to do any engine mods until my warranty goes bonk, but a bigger turbo, some plumbing, and I reckon the Baja's going to give some seriously nice cars fits off the line.

As it is, I never feel outgunned. It took me a long time to get good with the WRX, and if you're good with your WRX then you're going to be good with a Baja. I don't look for races, but I've definitely left some surprised quick cars behind. If you're in a stock WRX and aren't good with it, my Baja will say bye-bye for sure.

I've never experience the understeer everyone brings up, if anything I can bring the rear end around easier on the Baja than I could on the WRX. Stock, I'd say the suspension is freaking good. Like the WRX, the stock tires are cr*p.

To me, the Baja (turbo) is about getting over having a car that everybody knows is fast and trendy and a pain in the butt to keep clean (if you're using it to haul stuff like in a wagon), and getting into a car that you can throw nasty stuff in the back, be much more comfortable inside of, and still fling around more than Johnny Law would like you to. The Baja grows on me every day, while the WRX got to be more and more a drag to deal with.

Go drive one!

Nice write up. I've outgrown the performance/import scene and have decided to get what I really needed overall. I need to haul my bike during summertime and snowboard during wintertime and mainly more matured(not).
I bought a Yakima roof rack that I only used once because I couldn't stand the look of it on my WRX.
I can go with a Forester XT sure but the wife already drives an SUV + to me, the Baja looks and will satisfy my needs better.
I learned a lot from my WRX, for the 2 years that I've had it, it's been set up with many different performance configuration short of modding the internals.
I wish I could keep it and get a Baja at the same time but the big boss said "no". It took me awhile to convince her about trading my WRX for a Baja but she finally gave in (yay!).

Thanks Guys!!!
