Hey guys,
I'm working with a stock '01 Legacy L Sedan. I need more power, but don't have the cash to go out and pick up something like an '01 2.5 RS or something like that, so I'm just gonna stick with what I got and make it decent. I'm investigating Borla headers (part #17183), an Injen cold air intake (part #RD1210P), and a K&N air filter (Part # 332154). Any suggestions for a decent catback exhaust system? I'm looking for something with a nice and deep sound, but not very loud. Any suggestions?

If you want power, stay away from borlas. A lot of people here boast about stromung for power and sound but it gets kind of expensive. If you want all out power, get MRT. if you like sound though and really don't car about performance, get borlas. As far as an intake goes, get a ganzflow, they are cheaper than and injen and from my experience give you top end and retain bottom end.

FYI your Legacy has the same power as an RS. Try a WRX axleback+custom straight pipe+Brullen headers for a cheap exhaust setup w/ significant power gains.

I'm gonna get a Cobb racing cam, probably a decent axle back exhaust, and a Cobb CAI for my '00 Legacy L Sedan. |

alpinelegacy - We offer a cat-back exhaust for the BE & BH body styles. The following are just two examples. 1st being single 3.5" tip and 2nd being 4".
![]() ![]() Drop us a PM or email for more info. Forgo the Borla headers; you'd get more out of a hi-flow cat replacement. |

IC, now what exactly is to be gained by installing a catback system? I know there's an audible difference and also a performance boost, but how much of a boost should be expected for this vehicle?

alpinelegacy - Power gains all depend on whether or not you have other performance components (ie: headers, hi-flow cat, cams, intake, engine management). On the EJ25 motors the average gain is between 4-7whp gains. [for 2.25 piping]

so what happens when you increase the piping size? lets say 3" (hypothetically of course)
You say EJ25...I thought the Legacy sedan had an EJ253? |

![]() If you were to go to 3", you would get really high flow, but since you're NA, you will have almost no torque at all. NA engines get torque from backpressure in the exhaust system. 2.25" would be about the largest you would want to go, which also happens to be about the smallest you would want on a FI setup. ![]() |

omahasubaru - Lookin' good
![]() alpinelegacy - Unless you're going turbo, 3" is WAY overkill. N/A's operate on the principle of EGV (exhaust gas velocity). If you plan on staying N/A; 2.25" is the largest size you want to go on the street (unless you're building a crazy N/A motor and doing track; which which case 2.5" is more suitable). EJ25 is the general designation for the 2.5L EJ series motor. Chi_San - 'tis not backpressure it's EGV which is required to make power. |

side note:
is 2.5" not the way to go for a normal everyday driver? is it really too large? is the difference between 2.25" and 2.5" going to be that noticable (other than the loudness) powerwise? I'm asking because i'm looking into exhausts myself. anyone got a used one for sale? ![]() |

So, if 2.25" gives you more low-end torque than a 2.5", what would the pluses/minuses or going to a 2" system?
@Chi_San - do you know what exactly differs between the EJ251 and the EJ253? |

Thanks a million for all the explanations guys...sorry for being such a complete neophyte!
I know that a catback system replaces everything from the catalytic convertor and back, but where does the axekback system start/finish and what parts does it include/not include in a catback system? We've also agreed that a 2.25" catback system would be the most beneficial, but the screenshots ION posted earlier are 4"....is that just the tip or the whole system? |

the systems 2.25", as for going to 2", the problem is the backpressure begins to restrict the exhaust flow, the to any good NA exhaust is to keep exhaust gas velocity as high as possible, to big a pipe, and things really slow down, and don't allow the previous exhaust pulse to help pull the current pulse down the exhaust, again, to small a pipe, and things can't flow smoothly, theres just to much gas trying to fill the same space, and flow is less then optimal
axel back replaces just that, the axel back section, if you look under the car, you'll see where the stock midpipe ends and the axel back section begins, its basically the muffler plus the pipe that snakes around the axel to the midpipe, and ends at the stock location, since the axel back section is the most costly portion anyways, i think its well worth it just to get the whole cat back system |

alpinelegacy - It's the tip size that the 4" is referring to. Our N/A cat-backs are available in both 2.25" or 2.5".

iamrazor - pricing isn't allowed to be posted on a technical thread. please contact us via PM or email. Pricing depends directly on piping diameter and the # of tips etc.
