Default 245-40-17 on STi stock rims.. nono?

I need new tires for my car.. ride.. steed... or as Usher calls it.. my whip. I'm definitely going with Kuhmo MXs... now the question goes with sizing. Should I get OEM size of 225/45/17 or 245-40-17. I've done a search and read that there's no rub. Are there any downfalls about going to that larger size? Will it fit on 7.5" wide rims? Thanks a lot guys.

Don

For one thing, I think your speedometer/odometer would be off.

I would like to know the answers to his question, but also more to the point of the 05 rims which are 17x8". Can a 245 fit comfortable on there?

Thanks!

Kuhmo MXs, as well as most other tires in 245/40/17 will only fit on 8-9.5"

Really? It has already been done. It's a tight fit, but it can be done. The only thing I would worry about is the tire sidewall stiffness being compromised by an excessive amount of curve needed to get the fit.

On another note the stock RE070 225/45R17 are as wide as most performance 245/40R17s and some 255/40R17s. It's really a confusing game. I would not hesitate to go with a tire like the BFGoodrich G-Force T/A KD in 245/40R17. The Kumhos may also fit.

You can run 245s on a 7.5" rim without any problems, the MXs aren't that wide. In autocross guys run 275 Hoosiers on them.

speedometer won't be off much, 225/45 + 245/40 are practically the same diameter. heck the STi speedo is already like 5mph off.
tire size calculator

Personally I would think 245/40 max for an 8" rim, maybe 235/45 on a 7.5." But then I'm not trying to push the limits of adhesion.

update: they fit! no rubbing. However, I'm still deciding whether I like the MXs or not. ITs only been two days.

You running any camber more than stock? If so, how much? You got a 'drop' on the car? Coilovers/springs? If so, how much?

Thanks for answering out survery! Here is our two cents for your time!

Sincerely,

Dow
