Question No power with A/C on

Okay...its been fairly hot in Michigan these past few days and I've been testing out the air conditioner on my MY98 (just got it in May). I noticed that the AC reallys saps power....seems to be much more than in other cars I've driven. My '93 2.2L Legacy seems to have power with the AC on than the RS does(according to my precision a$$ dino ).

I'm not going to complain too much, as the RS really belts out some cold air....just wondering if other see this also.

I would say welcome to the wonderfull world of 4 cylinders, but you said you had a 2.2.

I feel the same way I hate how much the a/c drags down my RS so you know what...I dont use it! hehe, unless its brutely hot or hummid...

Dont worry your not alone

talk about A/C draining power... on my EJ18, when my compressor kicks in, it feels like the whole engine was dedicated to the A/C!!!

yea, even gears engage differently when the compressor turns on.

not to mention, it's one of the weakest A/Cs I've ever experienced, though I've learned now to resort to the breeze when the windows/roofs open, not too bad

Yeah the my 1.8L just about dies when I put on the AC. It gets pretty cold but it saps so much power its ridiculous. Can I get like a monster size alternator so I can generate more power?

After installing an underdrive pulley, the a/c isnt as strong as it used to be, but the power to the wheels is alot more than it used to be...I dont mind being hot doing what I love (driving is what I love).

Actually, when I replace the stock air filter with the K&N, there's more power than before with air on. I have no idea why, but it helps

But I thought that at WOT, the AC is supposed to shut off?

yea at WOT, the compressor shuts off, but when you go back to normal RPM, the thing kicks in and literally pulls the whole car back!

time to get roof vents!

Question

Here in Florida I use the A/C almost year round...I've never noticed any huge difference in power between using the A/C or not using it. Are you sure you aren't just imagining the power loss? LOL

And 2yLiTe, you are correct, during WOT the A/C compressor shuts off to put less strain on the motor.

Now on my wife's Impreza L (EJ18) I can "feel" a slight loss of power when the A/C is on but geez, it's a 1.8 after all, it's not a race car!

Just to let you know, the alternator has nothing to do with the A/C other than lighting up the button and spinning the fan. The A/C compressor is independent and is seperately belt driven from the alternator. A larger alternator will actually decrease your power further.

Default WRX with A/C on....

The A/C seriously drains on my WRX too, accentuates the lack of low rpm torque. You 2.5RS guys have an advantage at low RPMS. I sometimes stall off the line if I forget the A/C is on and I dont slip the clutch enough!
