Default Older Jeep Grand Cherokee?

I need to get a solid daily driver/winter car. Something that is reliable, I can carry stuff around in, take highway trips in, commute comfortably, is good in snow and dirt, and is presentable enough to drive people around in.

A jeep grand cherokee was suggested to me. I hear the pre-'97 years are very reliable, and the 4.0L I6 and auto trans are bulletproof. They have minor wear issues, but nothing a home mechanic can't handle easy and cheap. I've heard they are good on the highway, and ride well enough. If I got a fairly clean car, it would be more than nice enough to drive people around in.

I think I can get a clean, ~100k mile '94 for about $4-5K. Sounds like a good buy? I would expect to drive it about 20K miles a year for 5+ years, if it holds up.

Thanks,

Kevin

I had an older Cherokee with the 4.0 and auto... it had issues.

That said, it took me to 170k miles before getting too pricey to maintain. For $4k it's not much risk.

I had a 96 Grand with the I6. It drove great, no problems at all. The interior was turning to crap though, the door panels were peeling back and the seats were wearing out too quick for a 6 year old car (when I sold it). It handled well on the highway, in the snow, and on dirt roads. I bought it as a camp and ski car when I was in Seattle, and it performed those tasks quite well.

Chrysler Auto trannies and rear diffs are utter junk....esp. in the last 15-20 years.... stay away...far far away. The 4.0 I6 is bulletproof though if not a complete gas hog

Id suggest nissan pathfinders and toyota 4runners of the same era.

Jeep really hasnt made anything worth buying since the (amc) '78 CJ, maybe some of the 90's TJ's, and possibly the new rubicons.

Another vote for not a cherokee. Friend of mine got rid of one with a bad tranny. Don't remember what MY, but it was late 90's.
