Default USDM WRX Power Steering Rack into 95 Impreza 1.8L

The power steering on my car is leaking.. its rusted down in the powet steering rack. I can get a WRx one for a good price.. will it fit ? I found out (on here) recently that the axels etc etc from a WRx wont fit in the front of a GC unless its from a wagon. is this the same for the power steering stuff ?

Yes, unless You change out the steering arms coming out of the rack. What you should do is try to find a WRX wagon that has been roled and buy the cross member with the rack and controle arms.

It'll work. The mounting points are exactly the same as the WRX or the Legacy or the Forester. You'll just have to have the car aligned once you put it in.

No it wont work. I just treid the exact same swap. The spline count on the steering rack's input shaft is different. As well as the column. I plan to swap the column in as well eventually.

Yeah like he said there are a number of differences between the two. The big one being the pinion shaft on the WRX rack is larger and splined differently. It terminates the same distance from the rack so that's not an issue. There is no real easy way to make it work from what I've looked at. The other issue is the u-joint assembly from the WRX is not the same in length as the GC8, it has a steering dampener inline. The steering rack sits further away from the firewall than on the GC8. So if you swap the WRX steering column in there it probably still won't work because the lengths won't match up. There is some adjustability but I don't think it's within the range you have available.

Here are two solutions that I've found, but it requires you have the last u-joint from the WRX.

1) There is a solid part that seperates the two u-joints. Just cut them off in the middle and reweld the WRX one onto the GC8. People weld u-joints all the time for steering assemblies, I don't think it's going to be an issue. The power steering does most of the work for you.

2) Swap the very last ujoint assembly that has the splined portion on it. You can take the u-joints apart, I've done it. It's a pita, but it's doable. They have needle bearing end caps, if the needle bearings fall out you are sol.

Sorry to bring this thread back but I found this out the hard way last night.

Well, sort of... the WRX rack that is currently in my MY00 RS has the actual RS "gear" bolted in (the part that is held onto the rack with 2 bolts and 4 lines). The steering worked this way but since the spacing on the gear teeth is slightly different, there is a few mm of play in the wheel.

Tried to swap in the WRX gear and U joint that came with the car when I purchased it and it obviously won't work. My buddy has a welder so I may go that route, or just go back to the way it was and deal with the play in the wheel.

Anyone know about putting the WRX steering rack in a 97 Legacy GT? Would all this fiddling and welding have to be done?

Also, would 00 or 01 RS have the same spline and shaft size?

There seems to be more people with questions than answers on this topic. I know people are doing rack swaps...were are you people?!

thanks for any (real) help!

Sorry to bring up a deadish thread but:

Is there any advantage to changing a 1.8L Brighton steering rack over to an RS one? (I don't wanna deal with changing out the entire column for an STI one :-/ )
