Unhappy Help me decide! Silver GT 5-speed

I can get a Silver GT 5-speed with 59000 miles for $10200. It is in perfect shape and runs great. The problem I have is how much I hear about crankshaft seals going out and some kind of piston slap. What would you do? If the camshaft needs replacement down the road how much $? What is the piston slap and how much to fix it?

You emailed me, but I'm going to post the response because others here know a lot more about it than me.

In phase I ej25 engines (DOHC), Subaru made the piston skirts too short, and the suckers have a tendency to slap around a chew up the inside of the cylinders. For the Legacy, sometime in 1999 Subaru equipped cars with DOHC Phase I heads on Phase II blocks. For anything earlier, SoA will, after some prodding, replace the engine block. I have not had the problem show up in either of my '99s, so I have only tangentially followed the problem. Mr. Rubel can certainly sound off about the problem, how to spot it, and what the fix is, yes?

Question Phase I block replacement

Does Subaru replace shortblocks that develop piston slap when the warranty has expired? They should, but it seems to me that they probably don't. I ask because I have a '97 that is out of warranty. Unless the piston slap is very subtle my car is fine, but it only has 45K miles on it. I have used 10w30 synthetic since <10K miles. Maybe that helps?

Thanks, Doug

dvancleve-Subarus come with a 30,000 bumper to bumper and a 60,000 mile powertrane warranty. Piston slap and blown short blocks fall in the Powertrane(anthing covered in oil) warranty.

I have a 99 GT that RalliSpec confirmed that it has the high flow phase-I DOHC heads and the strong phase-II block.

Thanks
Brad

Somebody PM Subi-Gal. She had a 99 GT blew the engine and had to have it warranty replaced. Ask her about symptoms also.

On the other issue, I had my oil seals go (covered under powertrain) at about 59,000K. There are several seals that can and may fail on the Subaru engines- Camshafts, crankshaft and oil pump. All of these would show up as oil beads on the underside of the block betw. the timing belt cover and engine(in front).

I suspect my switch to synthetic at 50K+ miles may have helped cause this.

rats, does anyone else have trouble TYPING on the new board? its like my keyboard is on "delay".

I would immagine this new board uses more resources which will probably slow your computer down a little. That is unless you have resources to burn.
