Thumbs up Blood drive: calling all recruits in the Bedford/Burlington MA area - Dec 15th!!

Hi,

Please see my post further down this page for date and time details.

Thanks,
David

My relatively small company is trying to organize a blood drive with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The reason is that one of our friends at work is being treated for cancer - has been for about a year now - and he emailed us yesterday to ask whether we could donate blood. I did not realize until John (our friend) told us how much blood is used in the treatment of cancer.

Anyway, after reading his e-mail, one of my other colleagues at work contacted the Dana Farber Cancer Institute this morning to find out if they can come to do a blood drive here. The Brigham Blood Bank can come and we would need to have about 30 people who can donate.

The thing is, our company is not that big so we need to find more people.

Would any of you in the Bedford/Burlington MA area be up to helping us with this worthy cause? I know a tonne of you work on Crosby Drive itself so the drive to #14 Crosby where we're situated shouldn't be too hard of a commute.

The following is a list of Qualifications and Disqualifications to be a donor.
If you have specific questions or concerns, you can call the blood bank people directly at (617) 732-6620.

Donor Eligibility

Qualifications

- Be in good general health and free of chronic diseases
- Weigh at least 110 pounds (Raj and Paul may not qualify, sorry )
- Feel well on the day of donation
- Be 17 years of age or older

Disqualifications

- History of hepatitis
- History of coronary artery disease
- Insulin dependent diabetes
- History of most types of cancer
- History of sickle cell disease
- Travel in the past year to malarial risk area
- At risk for AIDS or HIV infection
- Being pregnant or trying to become pregnant
- Tattoo within 12 months prior to blood donation

John said it is the only thing we can do for him so lets do it. We will have plenty of orange juice and goodies on the day of the drive, so if you wish to enjoy them, you will need to have a bandage in your arm.

If you would be willing to help please call me at the number below or PM me.

Thanks very much!

I'm right around that weight, give or take a couple pounds. Otherwise I'd do it

Hi,

I'm told that the date will likely be Tuesday, November 16th, at 14 Crosby Drive, Bedford, MA 01730. I hope to have confirmation of this information later this afternoon.

As things stand right now, we have 11 people from my company signed up. We need to have 30 people in total which I'm confident I can help fill with NESICers.

Thanks for your kind offers to participate.

Default Please consider helping!

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the long delay in getting back to you onyl planning this event took a lot more effort on our part than you'd imagine.

Our colleague John passed away last month after a long and painful battle with cancer. The only thing he ever asked of us was to give blood because without a constant blood supply, he may not have lasted as long as he did.

My company -- Kurzweil Educational Systems -- in collaboration with the Brigham and Women's Hospital is sponsoring a blood drive in honor of our friend and colleague John Mattioli.

The drive is scheduled for Wednesday, December 15th at 14 Crosby Drive on the 2nd Floor.

John Mattioli was a patient at the hospital and we will be helping to replenish the hospital's blood supply. All units collected at the drive will be donated in the name of John Mattioli. A BWH blood donor "Thinking of You" card will be available to sign and will be given to his wife Lorie after the drive.

John said in his last email to us that we could help by donating blood which is essential to the treatment of many life threatening injuries and illnesses. Brigham and Women's is always in need of all blood types.

There are appointments available from 12:20 to 2:00 pm on December 15th.

If you are available, and would like to schedule an appointment, please get in touch with my colleague Betty Gegundez; her contact information is below:

Betty Gegundez
Kurzweil Educational Systems
14 Crosby Drive Bedford, MA 01730
Ph: (781)276-0653

Thank you so much in advance.

Hi, no reimbursement, sorry. We're doing this in honor of the memory of a colleague at work who died last month after a long battle with cancer.

His blind wife and 2 year old son will be grateful for anything anyone can do to help with the blood drive.

Thanks,
David

My aunt succumbed to lung cancer early this morning and it only makes me want to donate even more. I'll be there at 11:30 on Wednesday.

Hi Aaron,

Nope, no plans yet. I'm up for getting together with a group of NESIC blood suckers though.

Let me know.

So true. I've been turned away before.

I wish I could too, I myself took a ton of blood when I was born 2 months premature (and a twin). I was only about 3 lbs - 9 oz I believe.

Both my parents still go because they say they can never give enough considering the amount me and my brother took.

I'll keep trying to put on the weight. Maybe next time.

Hope things went well though, and you had a great turn out.

Thanks everyone - we managed to collect 24 units of blood from 31 people. 8 People were turned away because of recent surgery, tattoo, etc.

Hopefully we'll try this again in 6 months which should give the more promiscuous among you a chance to clean up your act and for Paul and Raj to put on some weight.

Seriously though, thanks very much. The blood drive people said that 24-units is a fantastic amount.

It was a blast. Unfortunately the only people I met there were freaking vampires.
Glad I was able to help.
