Question is aftermarket leather any good?

I ordered a blue wrx wagon from Carlsen Subaru in Redwood City last weekend and I was wondering if anyone has any opinions on the after market leather option? I saw an RS sedan that had black perforated leather and it looked sweet.

Did anyone get this option? And do you like it? Is it worth the extra $1100?

I think the fabric that comes with the car is kind of thin and cheap feeling.

apexwrx got leather done on his silver rex from sc subaru for $1000, dude it is frickin flawless.

He was so lucky to have a set of sti seats laying around and had them wrapped instead of the stock front wrx seats, that leather is perfect, i would reccommend it!!

talk to apexwrx and im sure he will send you a pic, every time i see it i drool.

Yeah, that's about right.

IMHO of course...

Why do you want leather? Leather belongs only on control surfaces like the steering wheel and shifter, where it enhances the grip. It doesn't belong on seating surfaces, where it's hot in the summer, cold in the winter, makes funny noises, looks like crap after a few years, and costs a lot of money.

I'd take a nice set of Recaro SRD's or suede STi seats any day.

I would be very careful with aftermarket leather. I had it in my last car and never again. It all depends on the company, type of leather, the actual installer and method of installation. I had to bring it back to the dealership a few times just for the leather and they had to send it out the company that did it... down time or they removed the seat that had the problem.

I got the aftermarket leather from Carlsen on my WRX wagon. The color matches perfectly & the fit is great.

I have a couple of pixs of the interior (dash, shifter, etc.), but you can kind of see the leather:

Let me know if you have any questions.

... the reason I went with leater is that it's **much** easier to keep clean - I have 2 dogs

The reason I want leather is it makes the interior look much nicer and is easier to keep clean.

I drive an Accord now and the fabric "sheds" this fuzzy stuff all over the car. Stains are harder to remove and shampooing the fabric is a real pain (I've only done this once).

Also, anyone know if the aftermarket leather installers offer warranties with their product. If I get it through Carlsen it will be covered with the new car warranty vs. if I get it after delivery I'm on my own?

wyliepalmer -- good points about cleaning. Then again I'd take my vacuum cleaner over funky leather soap any day. To each his own I guess.

FWIW, the Subaru fabric doesn't shed. Probably because it's not soft and luxurious.

I'm with you, the stock cloth looks kind of cheap (it is a relatively cheap car, but still...). I got the leather installed through Carlsen Subaru on my Blue WRX Wagon. So far so good.
I had an immediate question/concern about an apparent inconsistency in the color on my back seat so Carlsen told me to call the company. I spoke with a company rep who was really cool and he recommended Lexol cleaner and conditioner. Then he said if that didn't fix the problem they would come visit me at work to see what they could do! House calls are nice!
Anyway, the coloring looks fine after a good conditioning and the interior looks WAY better. So far it hasn't been any hotter than the cloth was.
I say it is worth the money! Time will tell on the quality, but it seems to be a pretty good install. BMW wants $3K to put leather in a 330Xi! Granted, they probably put more/better leather in the beast - one of the many reasons I am sporting the Subie!
Enjoy your new car!
